There is no past; the future has not come. The present is the infinitely small point of contact between the nonexistent past and the nonexistent future. And it is in this point, in this timeless point, that our true life is lived.

    1. “Time passes!” we are used to saying. There is no time; it is we who move.

    After the Talmud.

    2. Time is behind us, time is ahead of us; with us there is none.

I consist of a little body and a soul. Now to this little body all things are indifferent, for it is not able to perceive differences. But to the understanding those things only are indifferent which are not the works of its own activity. But whatever things are the works of its own activity, all these are in its power. And of these however only those which are done with reference to the present; for as to the future and the past activities of the mind, even these are for the present indifferent.

    3. I am made up of spirit and body. To the body all things are indifferent, for matter is without the power of distinguishing anything whatever. To the spirit, too, all that does not come from the spirit is indifferent, for the life of the spirit is independent. But the life of the spirit has not the least significance in the past or in the future. All its importance is concentrated in the present.

    Marcus Aurelius.

Time is the supreme illusion. It is but the inner prism by which we decompose being and life, the mode under which we perceive successively what is simultaneous in idea.
For the supreme intelligence there is no time; what will be, is. Time and space are fragments of the infinite for the use of finite creatures.

    4. Time is the greatest of illusions. It is only the inner prism through which we break up being and life, the form under which we see little by little what in idea is timeless. The eye does not see a sphere all at once, although the sphere exists all at once. One of two things is needed: either the sphere must turn before the eye that looks at it, or the eye must go around the sphere it is observing.

In the first case, it is the world unfolding, or seeming to unfold, in time; in the second, it is our thought, analyzing and step by step reconstructing. For the highest reason there is no time: what will be, is. Time and space are the infinite crumbled into pieces for the use of finite beings.

    Amiel.

    5. One can imagine a thinking being for whom it is easier to foresee the future than to remember the past. Even in the instincts of insects there is something that makes us suppose they are guided more by the future than by the past. If animals possessed memory of the past to the same degree as presentiment of the future, some insects would surpass us; in fact, however, the power of presentiment seems always to stand in inverse ratio to memory of the past.
