Faith answers those questions to which reason can give no answer, but which reason itself cannot help asking.

He is the greatest person of the ages; the proudest achievement of the human race. He taught the absolute religion, love to God and man. That God has yet greater men in store I doubt not; to say this is not to detract from the majestic character of Christ, but to affirm the omnipotence of God. When they come, the old contest will be renewed, the living prophet stoned; the dead one worshipped. Be that as it may, there are duties he teaches us far different from those most commonly taught.
Had he conformed to what was told him of men; had he counselled only with flesh and blood; he had been nothing but a poor Jew--the world had lost that rich endowment of religious genius, that richest treasure of religious life, the glad tidings of the one religion, absolute and true. What if he had said, as others, "None can be greater than Moses, none so great?" He had been a dwarf; the spirit of God had faded from his soul! But he conferred with God, not men; took counsel of his hopes, not his fears.
Working for men, with men, by men, trusting in God, and pure as truth, he was not scared at the little din of church or state, and trembled not, though Pilate and Herod were made friends only to crucify him that was a born King of the world. Methinks I hear that lofty spirit say to you or me, poor brother, fear not, nor despair. The goodness actual in me is possible for all. God is near thee now as then to me; rich as ever in truth, as able to create, as willing to inspire.

    1. Christ was a great man. He preached the true, universal religion — of love for God and for man. But I do not doubt that God has still greater men in the future. In saying this I do not diminish the greatness of Christ’s character, but affirm the almightiness of God. And when such men come, the old struggle will begin again: once more they will stone the living prophet and deify the dead one.

But however that may be, Christ teaches us now truths utterly opposed to those that are commonly taught. Had he made his teaching agree with what he was told about men, had he agreed only with flesh and blood, he would have been only a poor Jew, and the world would have lost the most precious treasure of religious life, the glad tidings of the one, universal and true religion.

What if he, like others, had said: no one can be higher and truer than Moses? He would have been nothing, and the spirit of God would have left his soul. But he took counsel not with men but with God; he listened to his hopes, not to his fears. He labored for men, with men and through men; he believed in God and, pure as Truth, feared neither church nor state, and was not dismayed when Pilate and Herod became friends only in order to crucify him. It always seems to me that I hear the voice of that lofty spirit saying to me and to you: “Do not fear, poor brother, and do not despair. The goodness that was in me is possible for you too. God is as near to you as he was near to me then, and as rich in truth, and as ready to inspire everyone who will serve him.”

Death! Silence! Eternity! What mysteries, what names of terror to the being who longs for happiness, immortality, perfection! Where shall I be to-morrow--in a little while--when the breath of life has forsaken me?
To give happiness and to do good, there is our only law, our anchor of salvation, our beacon light, our reason for existing. All religions may crumble away; so long as this survives we have still an ideal, and life is worth living.

    2. Death, silence, the abyss — dreadful mysteries for a being that strives toward immortality, toward the good, toward perfection. Where shall I be tomorrow, in a little while, when I no longer breathe? Where will those be whom I love? Where are we going? What are we? The eternal riddles stand before us always in their relentless solemnity. Mysteries on every side. Faith is the one star in this darkness of the unknown...

Well, what of it? So long as the world is the work of the good, and so long as the consciousness of duty does not deceive us. To give happiness and to do good — this is our law, our anchor of salvation, our lighthouse, the meaning of our life. Let all religions perish, if only this one remains; we shall have an ideal — and life will be worth living.

    5. We have one, only one, infallible guide: the universal spirit that pervades all of us together and each of us singly, that puts into each a striving toward what ought to be; the same spirit that bids the tree grow toward the sun, bids the plant ripen and cast its seed, and bids us strive toward God and, in that striving, become ever more united with one another.

As long as we live, we believe. The nearer our faith is to the truth, the happier our life; the further that faith is from the truth, the unhappier we are.

Without faith people do not live: they die a natural death or take their own lives.
