A deed done only for human glory is always bad, whatever its consequences. A deed in which the wish for good and the wish for human glory had an equal share is indifferent. A good deed is only one whose chief motive is doing the will of God.

1. A free being who gives himself over to himself thereby gives himself over to the devil; in the moral world there is no land without a master, and unclaimed lands belong to the evil one.

2. If you knew from what source the judgments and interests of men flow, you would cease to seek the approval and praise of men.
3. If you care about people’s approval, you will never dare to do anything. People’s judgments are endlessly various. You will say, “I seek the approval of good people,” — but the people you call good are those who, as you know, will approve the deed you intend.

Trotter, 1910We do not content ourselves with the life we have in ourselves and in our own being; we desire to live an imaginary life in the mind of others, and for this purpose we endeavour to shine. We labour unceasingly to adorn and preserve this imaginary existence, and neglect the real.

4. We are not content with our true inner life; we want to live yet another, an imagined life in the thoughts of others, and to that end we force ourselves to seem what we are not in reality. We labor without ceasing to adorn this imagined being, and neglect the real one. If we possess calm, faithfulness, generosity, we hasten to proclaim it as soon as we can, so as to attach these virtues to the imagined being.
To give these qualities to the imagined being, we are capable of depriving ourselves of them. We are ready to be cowards, if only we may pass for brave.
5. In every good deed there is some share of the wish for people’s approval. It is a misfortune if a deed is done only for human glory; but if some share of the wish for approval enters into the wish for good, the good deed remains good. Yet how much better it would be if it were done only for God.
Let people’s approval be the consequence of your deed, not its aim.
To train ourselves to live only for God, it is good to do such deeds as no one will ever know of. Do such deeds, and you will know a particular joy.
