My bodily life is subject to suffering and death, and no efforts of mine can deliver me from suffering or from death. But my spiritual life is subject neither to suffering nor to death. And therefore my salvation from suffering and death lies in one thing only: in transferring my consciousness into my spiritual “I.”

    1. There are two ways of knowing the outer world.

One — the crudest and the unavoidable one — is the way of knowing by the five senses. If this way of knowing were the only one, then the world we know would not have taken shape in us out of this way of knowing; there would be a meaningless chaos.

The other way consists in this: having come to know oneself through love for oneself, to come to know other beings through that same love — people, animals, plants, stones, the heavenly bodies — and again, by means of love, the relations of beings to one another, and out of these relations to form the whole world as we know it.

This way of knowing is the restoration of the union between beings that the first way of knowing has broken. This way of knowing is founded on love, that is, on the merging of oneself with all other beings, with God.

    2. …not my will, but yours be done. — Luke 22:42.

…yet not what I will, but what you will. — Mark 14:36.

…not as I will, but as you will. — Matthew 26:39.

Adorer, comprendre, recevoir, sentir, donner, agir : voilà ta loi, ton devoir, ton bonheur, ton ciel.

There is but one thing needful--to possess God.
To adore, to understand, to receive, to feel, to give, to act: there is my law my duty, my happiness, my heaven.
Every life has its potentiality of greatness, and as it is impossible to be outside God, the best is consciously to dwell in Him.

    3. One thing only is needful: to be conscious of God. All the feelings, all the powers of soul and mind, all the outward means of understanding are only openings onto the Divinity, only ways of adoring God. You must know how to tear yourself away from all that can be lost, and attach yourself solely to what is eternal and fundamental, and enjoy all the rest as something lent to you for a time. To adore, to understand, to receive, to feel, to give, to act — this is your law, your duty, your happiness, your heaven — come what may, even death. Establish inner harmony, live before God, in communion with him, and leave it to the eternal powers, which you cannot fight against, to guide your life. If death does not take you yet, so much the better. If it carries you off, again so much the better. If it half kills you, still so much the better: it closes to you the field of success in order to open to you the field of great deeds, of self-renunciation, of moral greatness. Every life has its own greatness, and since it is impossible for you to go outside God, it is better to choose him consciously as your dwelling.

    4. How much moral torment — and all of it in order to die in a few minutes! What is there to take an interest in, and why?

The center of life is neither in thought nor in feeling, nor in will, nor even in consciousness, so far as it thinks, feels, or wishes.
Only those truths which have entered into this last region, which have become ourselves, become spontaneous and involuntary, instinctive and unconscious, are really our life--that is to say something more than our property.

    5. The center of life is not in thought, not in feeling, not in will, not even in consciousness insofar as it thinks, feels, and wills; for a moral truth may be grasped by all these means and still escape us. Deeper than our consciousness lies our being: our essence, our true foundation. Only those truths that enter this realm, having become our very selves, unexpectedly and unintentionally, instinctively and unconsciously — only those make up our real life, that is, our true “I.” So long as we can make out any space between the truth and ourselves, we are outside it. Thought, feeling, desire, the consciousness of life — all this is not yet life. In essence, we can find peace and tranquility only in life, and in eternal life. And eternal life is the divine life; it is God. To be a divine being — that, then, is the aim of life; only then can the truth not be lost by us, because it is no longer outside us, nor even in us, but we are the truth, and the truth is us; we are then the truth, the will, and the work of God. Freedom then becomes our nature; the creature is one with the Creator, is united with him by love, becomes what it ought to be. Its education is complete, and its final bliss begins. The sun of time sets, and the light of eternal bliss appears.

    7. If you want to attain knowledge of the all-embracing “I,” you must first of all get to know yourself. In order to know yourself, you must sacrifice your “I” to the universal “I.” Sacrifice your life if you want to live in the spirit. Withdraw your thoughts from outward things and from all that presents itself from without. Try to keep the images that arise away from you, so that they do not cast a dark shadow on your soul.

Your shadows live and vanish. That which is eternal in you, that which understands, belongs to the life that does not pass away. This eternal thing is a being that was, is, and will be, and whose hour will never strike.

What we call the happiness and unhappiness of our animal “I” lies outside our will and depends on a higher will; but the good or evil of our spiritual “I” depends on us, on our obedience or disobedience to this higher will.
