The moment a man parts with moral independence ; the moment he judges of duty, not from the inward voice, but from the interests and will of a party ; the moment he commits himself to a leader or a body, and winks at evil because division would hurt the cause ; the moment he shakes off his particular responsibility, because he is but one of a thousand or million by whom the evil is done ; that moment he parts with his moral power.
He is shorn of the energy of single-hearted faith in the Right and the True. He hopes from man's policy what nothing but loyalty to God can accomplish. He substitutes coarse weapons forged by man's wisdom for celestial power.

2. From the moment that a man has given up his moral independence, from the moment that a man has begun to determine his duty not by the inner voice but by the views of a certain class or party, from the moment that he has shaken off his personal responsibility because he is only one of millions — from that moment he has lost his moral strength; he now expects from men what God alone can accomplish; he puts the crude precepts of the human mind in the place of divine power.

4. There is a twofold peace. There is a negative peace; it is the absence of noise, of gnawing cares; it is tranquility after struggle, after storms. But there is another, more perfect peace of the soul, which this first peace only precedes — that divine tranquility which understands all things, whose true name is “the kingdom of God within us.” To this peace of the soul belongs the tranquility that religion gives us. It is a conscious union with God and the world, a bond of love with all beings, a love of all that is pure and innocent, the ability to sacrifice one’s own desires and interests, a share in the spirit and life of the universe, the complete agreement of one’s will with its infinite source. In this lies the true tranquility and happiness of man.

Do you ask what this deep principle was ? I answer, it was his conviction of the greatness of the human soul. He saw in man the impress and image of the divinity, and therefore thirsted for his redemption, and took the tenderest interest in him, whatever might be the rank, character, or condition in which he was found.
Jesus looked on men with an eye which pierced beneath the material frame. The body vanished before him. The trappings of the rich, the rags of the poor, were nothing to him. He looked through them as though they did not exist, to the soul ; and there, amidst clouds of ignorance and plague-spots of sin, he recognised a spiritual and immortal nature, and the germs of power and perfection which might be unfolded for ever. In the most fallen and depraved man he saw a being who might become an angel of light. Still more, he felt there was nothing in himself to which men might not ascend.

1. You ask what the chief essence of Christ’s character is. I answer that it is his confidence in the greatness of the human soul. He saw in man the reflection and image of divinity, and therefore he loved man, whoever he might be, whatever the conditions of his life and character. Jesus looked on people with a gaze that pierced the material shell — the body vanished before him. He looked through the finery of the rich and the rags of the beggar into the soul of man; and there, amid the darkness of ignorance and the stains of sin, he found the seeds of strength and perfection, which can develop without end: a spiritual, immortal nature. In the most deeply fallen, depraved man he saw a being who could be transformed into an angel of light. Even more than that: he felt that there was nothing in himself that any man could not attain.

It is common to distinguish between the intellect and the conscience, between the power of thought and virtue, and to say that virtuous action is worth more than strong thinking. But we mutilate our nature by thus drawing lines between actions or energies of the soul, which are intimately, indissolubly bound together.
Take away thought from virtue, and what remains worthy of a man ?
Without power of thought, what we call conscientiousness, or a desire to do right, shoots out into illusion, exaggeration, pernicious excess. The most cruel deeds on earth have been perpetrated in the name of conscience. Men have hated and murdered one another from a sense of duty.

6. It is usual to make a distinction between reason and conscience, saying that good deeds are more important than powerful thinking. But by such a division of the inseparably united powers of the soul we cripple our nature. Take thought away from virtue, and what will remain? Without the power of thought, what we call conscience degenerates into fancies, exaggeration, the justification of evil. The cruelest deeds in the world have been done in the name of conscience. People have hated and killed one another as a duty of conscience.

2. The dignity of man lies in that spiritual principle which is called sometimes reason, sometimes conscience. This principle, rising above the local and the temporary, holds undoubted truth and eternal right. In the midst of the imperfect it sees perfection. It is universal, impartial, and always at odds with all that is partial and selfish in human nature. This principle tells each of us with authority that our neighbor is as precious as we are, and that his rights are as sacred as ours. It bids us receive the truth, however repugnant it may be to our pride, and be just, however much it may be to our disadvantage. It is this same principle that calls us to whatever is beautiful, holy, and happy, in whomever we may meet these qualities. This principle is a ray of divinity in man.

Without this inward spiritual freedom outward liberty is of little worth. What boots it that I am crushed by no foreign yoke if, through ignorance and vice, through selfishness and fear, I want the command of my own mind ?

2. Without inner freedom, outward freedom is worth nothing. What good is it to me if I am not crushed by outward violence, but through ignorance, vice, egoism, and fear do not govern my own soul? I will call only that man free who is not shut up in himself or his sect, who overcomes pride, anger, and sloth, and is ready to sacrifice himself for the good of humanity.

2. In our soul lies the seed of the truth of immortality. It lies in reason, which sees the incompleteness of our existence in this world, an incompleteness that requires continuation for its goal to be reached. This seed is in our thirst for happiness, so strong that it can never be satisfied in this world. This seed is in the love of good, which, in the measure that we cultivate it, awakens in us a striving toward complete perfection and union with the Perfect.

Perhaps in our presence, the most heroic deed on earth is done in some silent spirit, the loftiest purpose cherished, the most generous sacrifice made, and we do not suspect it.
I believe this greatness to be most common among the multitude, whose names are never heard.
Among common people will be found more of hardship borne manfully, more of unvarnished truth, more of religious trust, more of that generosity which gives what the giver needs himself, and more of a wise estimate of life and death, than among the more prosperous.

3. The true greatness of human life is almost always wholly invisible. It may very well be that before our eyes, silently and secretly, the greatest of great deeds is being done, the most magnanimous sacrifice made, the loftiest design conceived, and we do not even suspect it. I believe that such greatness is very common among many people whose names we do not hear and do not know. I am sure that among the so-called simple people one more often meets with sufferings bravely borne, more often with unvarnished truth, firm faith, and that true magnanimity which gives away what the giver himself needs; and, above all, more often than among the rich, one meets with a true understanding of the meaning of life and death.

2. Ask most Christians what the chief evil is from which Christ delivered humanity, and they will say: from hell, from eternal fire, from punishment hereafter. Accordingly they think that salvation is something that another can accomplish for them. People flee from an outward hell, when in reality they carry within themselves the hell they ought most to fear. The salvation man most needs, the one that brings man deliverance, is salvation from the evil in his own soul. There is something far worse than outward punishment. It is the state of a soul that has rebelled against God, the state of a soul endowed with divine power but giving itself over to the power of animal lusts — a soul which, living in the sight of God, fears the threat or the anger of man and prefers human glory to its own quiet consciousness of virtue. There is no perdition worse than this.
It is this very state of the soul, which the unrepentant man carries with him into the grave, it is this that we must fear.
To be saved, in the true meaning of the word, is to raise the fallen spirit, to heal the sick soul, to restore to it freedom of thought, of conscience, of love. In this state alone is the salvation that Christ taught.
All the true teaching of Christianity is directed toward such salvation.
5. The spirit of God enfolds our souls and penetrates them. We do not see it, because it is too near to us. And it is near to us not only so that we may know it, but so that it may act upon us, influence us and impart its divinity to us. In this lies the great fatherly gift of God.

But do we understand our spiritual Brotherhood ? Do we feel ourselves to be derived from one Heavenly Parent, in whose image we are all made, and whose perfection we may constantly approach ? Do we feel that there is one divine life in our own and in all souls ? This seems to me the only true bond of man to man.
There can be no spirit of brotherhood, no true peace, any further than men come to understand their affinity with and relation to God, and the infinite purpose for which He gave them life.
With this great truth in his heart a man cannot insult a fellowman, for he beholds the Divine in the Human.
Can you conceive then of a truth so practical as this doctrine of the greatness of man as a moral being?
We need a New Revelation — not of Heaven or of Hell — but of the Spirit within ourselves.

As long as men regard one another as they now do, that is as little better than the brutes, they will continue to treat one another brutally. Each will strive, by craft or skill, to make others his tools.
As yet these ideas are treated as a kind of spiritual romance; and the teacher who really expects men to see in themselves and one another the children of God, is smiled at as a visionary. The reception of this plainest truth of Christianity would revolutionise society, and create relations among men not dreamed of at the present day.
None of us can conceive the change of manners, the new courtesy and sweetness, the mutual kindness, deference, and sympathy, the life and energy of efforts for social melioration, which are to spring up, in proportion as man shall penetrate beneath the body to the spirit, and shall learn what the lowest human being is. Then insults, wrongs, and oppressions, now hardly thought of, will give a deeper shock than we receive from crimes, which the laws punish with death. Then man will be sacred in man’s sight ; and to injure him will be regarded as open hostility towards God.

2. Do we understand our spiritual brotherhood? Do we understand our descent from one heavenly Father, whose image we bear within us and to whose perfection we may continually draw nearer? Have we recognized that in the souls of all men, as in our own, there is one and the same divine life? And yet this alone makes the true, free bond between men.
To change the order of men’s life, a new respect of men for one another is needed. As long as men look on one another as they do now, almost as on cattle, they will not cease to treat men like cattle, and will go on making them, by force or by cunning, the tools for reaching their own ends. There can be no brotherhood among men until they understand their kinship and their relation to God, and the great calling for which life is given them. Now, though, such thoughts are looked on as fancies, and the teacher who hopes to find in men a faith in their brotherhood and their sonship to God is looked on as a dreamer. And yet the acknowledgment of this simplest truth of Christianity would turn all society upside down and would establish among men such relations as we cannot now imagine. None of us can picture the change in men’s dealings with one another, the tenderness, the respect, the gentleness, and the energy of effort for the betterment of society that would arise as men came to penetrate to the spiritual part of one another and to understand the significance of the soul of every human being, even the lowest. Then the insults, the hurts, the oppressions that we do not even notice now would outrage us more than the greatest crimes of today. Then every man would be sacred in the eyes of man, and an insult done to a man would seem enmity against God. A man who acknowledged this truth could not abuse his neighbor, for he would see the divine in him. No truth can be imagined so practical as this teaching. Yes, we need a new revelation — not of heaven and hell, but of the spirit that lives in us.
