    3. “I and God are one!” said the teacher. “But if you take my body for God, you are mistaken. If you take for God my incorporeal being, separate from other beings, you are mistaken too. Only when you understand within yourselves my true I, the one that is truly one with God and one in all people, will you not be mistaken. To understand this I, you must raise up the man within yourselves. And when you have raised him up, you will see that there is no difference at all between you and other people.”

It only seems to us that we are separate beings, as it seems to every blossom on an apple tree that it is a separate being, while they are all only the blossom of one apple tree, and all have come from one seed.

Not located. As in October, November and December, no online text of F. A. Strakhov's writings holds the thought. It may come from his manuscripts: the Jubilee vol. 42 commentary says that for the weekly reading «Разум» Strakhov offered a passage from his own notes, unpublished at the time, and he read the Circle's proofs. The parable ("I and God are one," said the teacher; the true "I" is one in all people; we are like blossoms on one apple tree, grown from one seed) echoes John 10:30.

    7. Just as a man shut up from birth in a room with frosted glass in its window would come to call the sun frosted glass, that is, by the name of the one object that lets the sun’s light through into the room, so the Gospel defines the idea of God by the name of that highest feeling, or that highest human faculty, which serves as the only channel of divine revelation from above. Namely, it calls God love, understanding (the Word).

And as only release from confinement will allow the prisoner to tell the sun itself from the frosted glass it lights, so too only some degree or other of release from the bonds of corporeality, of materiality, will give the human soul the possibility of a more immediate union with the essence of the Deity.

But until then, people who revere their reason above all will identify God with reason and call him reason; people who revere the feeling of love above all will identify God with love and call him love.

And, finally, people who as yet believe neither in their reason nor in their love, and who precisely because of this believe blindly and unquestioningly in the authority of another person, will identify God with a person.

Translation note. God is love: 1 John 4:8. «Слово», “the Word”, is the Logos of John 1:1, which Tolstoy, in his own version of the Gospels, rendered «разумение», “understanding”.

    3. As dryness (the absence of damp) in nature depends on two causes opposite to each other, great cold (the frosts of winter) and great heat (the hot spells of summer), so decisiveness of character (the absence of wavering) in man is conditioned by two causes opposite to each other: a purely pagan self-consciousness in man on the one hand, and a purely Christian one on the other.

And as in spring, that is, at the time of transition from winter to summer, the least dryness is to be seen and, on the contrary, the most damp appears, so too in man, during his state of transition from paganism to Christianity, the least decisiveness of character appears and, on the contrary, the most wavering shows itself as to what he should do and how he should act.

Only people who do not understand what has brought about this season and this state can fail to rejoice both in springtime and in the state of transition from paganism to Christianity. But people who understand that the damp of spring in nature and the indecision, the wavering in man are brought about by a state of transition in nature and in man — namely, by the turning of the sun toward summer in the first case and by a heightening of the understanding of life in the second — will not only not grieve over the damp and the indecision they observe, but will rejoice in both, as a clear sign of the approach of summer in nature and of the kingdom of God in humanity.

Strakhov (1861–1923) holds the thought; it may come from his manuscripts, since he read every proof of the Circle from February 1905 and Tolstoy cut and corrected the reflections of his that went into it (Jubilee vol. 42 commentary). The comparison runs: as dryness in nature comes from two opposite causes, great cold and great heat, so decisiveness of character comes from a purely pagan or a purely Christian self-consciousness; as spring, the passage from winter to summer, is the dampest time, so the passage from paganism to Christianity is the most irresolute; and those who understand both will rejoice in them as signs of summer and of the kingdom of God.

    5. Seeking God is like scooping up water with a net. While you are scooping, the water is in the net. Once you pull it out, you have caught nothing.

While you seek God in thought and deed, God is in you. As soon as you decide that you have found God, and rest content, you have lost him.

    11. In the world, like powder in a mine, vast stores of evil and untruth lie hidden. When we come to make new deposits of the same evil and falsehood in this mine, we apparently do not thereby disturb the general calm and balance of human society; but when, as our deposit in the mine, we bring not evil and falsehood but good and truth, then good and truth, like sparks, blow up the powder of evil and falsehood, and the evil and falsehood come to light and become manifest.

To refrain from doing good to people, and to go on taking part in upholding the reigning untruth only so as to avoid an explosion of the powder in the mine, is to fail to understand the meaning of the explosion, which only discharges the evil that has built up, and thereby does not increase but lessens its amount.

Christ, who himself acknowledged that by his teaching he had brought not peace, but a sword and division on earth, was not troubled by the evil that he thus brought out into the open, but rejoiced in the open clash of good with evil and of light with darkness, which is what must bring the manifest triumph of light and good.

No online text of Strakhov's holds the reflection (evil and falsehood lie stored in the world like powder in a mine; adding good and truth sets them off and brings them into the open; to refrain from doing good for fear of the explosion is to misunderstand it, since it discharges the evil and lessens it; Christ, who said he brought a sword and division, rejoiced at the open clash of good and evil). Its Gospel allusion is Matthew 10:34–35 (Luke 12:51). It may come from his manuscripts (Jubilee vol. 42 commentary).

    3. Bad organization cannot be fought with violence, nor even with good organization.

    Why not organize labor!

We may take that up as well. But we must not forget that by organizing labor we attain not the well-being of humanity, but only the success and productivity of labor itself.

The well-being of humanity can be attained only by an independent moral and religious path.

For what is vexing and outrageous is not so much that a bad social order exists as that man has produced it, puts up with it, and even makes use of it for his own selfish ends.

And the fight must begin with what outrages us more.

    7. There are two kinds of love.

In the one, I simply love people, without knowing love for the spiritual principle that is one in all people.

In the other, I love only one thing in all people — the spiritual principle that is one in all people.

The difference between the one love and the other is that in the first case I will love people only so long as they are pleasant to me.

In the second case, when I love in people their essence, which is one in all of us, I will love people even when they are unpleasant to me.

In the first case we will again and again be changing the objects of our love, changing wives, friends, husbands, and so on, since the people we love are constantly changing, and our feelings toward them change as well.

In the second case, as our own moral growth proceeds, we will love more and more that divine spiritual principle which we will come to know more and more clearly in all people.

The Jubilee commentary (vol. 42) says Strakhov read the Circle's proofs and that Tolstoy cut and corrected the reflections of his that went into it, and that one of them came from Strakhov's own unpublished notes, so this one may be from his manuscripts. Tolstoy kept a shorter version for «Путь жизни», printed among its variants (Jubilee vol. 45, no. 55, to ch. V «Любовь»), signed «Федор Страхов».

    7. “Woe to you if everyone speaks well of you,” said Christ.

The meaning of these words is that we should not set ourselves an outward aim: to please people, bending and adapting ourselves to the multitude of their imperfect and conflicting tastes, wants, and whims; but that we should set ourselves an inner aim: to please God, listening for and adapting ourselves to his one and perfect will.

And just as masons could put up a building not when they hewed the stones, fitting their shapes to the irregularities and peculiarities of the shapes of other stones, but only when they adapted their shapes to the rectangle, so people will succeed in establishing the kingdom of God on earth not when they bring up themselves and their children in accordance with the conflicting, changeable demands of what people say, but only when they perfect themselves by the laws of good and truth common to all, which are known with the help of conscience and reason.

Strakhov (1861–1923) holds the thought (Christ's “woe to you if all speak well of you” means that we should set ourselves the inward aim of pleasing God by attending to his one perfect will, and not the outward aim of pleasing people by fitting ourselves to their many imperfect and conflicting tastes; as masons could build only by squaring each stone to the right angle and not by fitting it to the irregularities of the others, so people will set up the kingdom of God on earth only by perfecting themselves by the laws of good and truth common to all, known through conscience and reason, and not by the shifting demands of rumor). The Jubilee commentary (vol. 42) says Strakhov read every proof of the Circle and that Tolstoy corrected and much shortened the reflections of his that went into it. A draft for «Путь жизни» (variants to ch. XVI «Тщеславие», no. 88, unsigned) opens with the same sentence and glosses it otherwise: it is bad for a man to be praised by the majority, since the majority always stands on a low step of understanding life (tolstoy). The saying is Luke 6:26; Tolstoy's «Горе вам, если все будут говорить о вас хорошо» (woe to you if all speak well of you) stands for the Synodal «Горе вам, когда все люди будут говорить о вас хорошо!» (woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you!), and leaves out the reason, «ибо так поступали с лжепророками отцы их» (for so did their fathers to the false prophets) (related).

    1. A Christian, not knowing where the spirit that gives him life comes from or where it goes (John 3:8), the spirit that God gives not by measure (John 3:34), cannot set himself an outward aim in life.

The concept of an aim is borrowed from the everyday round of earthly affairs and undertakings. But the aim of the whole universe is beyond man’s reach, and so in his life he is compelled to be guided not by an outward aim but by the indications of God’s will, known within himself.

Just as a sailor, in choosing the right course for his vessel, can be guided by the sight of the shore only when it is within his view — for example, in crossing a river — but in crossing the ocean must turn to the indications of the compass, so a Christian, in choosing the right path of life, can be guided by outward aims only in the affairs of everyday life; but in the work of seeking the general meaning of life he must turn to the indication of the inner voice of conscience, which always clearly and distinctly warns a man whenever he departs, or even intends to depart, from the path of truth.

Not found. As in October to August, no online text of F. A. Strakhov (1861–1923) holds the thought (a Christian, who does not know whence the spirit comes and whither it goes, cannot set himself an outward aim in life; as a sailor steers by the shore only when it is in sight, as in crossing a river, and by the compass on the ocean, so a Christian may follow outward aims in everyday affairs, but in seeking the meaning of life must follow the inner voice of conscience). The Jubilee commentary (vol. 42) says Strakhov read every proof of the Circle and that Tolstoy corrected and much shortened the reflections of his that went into it; Tolstoy did not reprint this one in «На каждый день» or «Путь жизни». The thought cites John 3:8 and 3:34 in its own words: «не знающий, откуда приходит и куда уходит дух» (not knowing whence the spirit comes and whither it goes) for the Synodal «не знаешь, откуда приходит и куда уходит» (thou canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth), said there of the wind or spirit and of everyone born of the Spirit, and «которого не мерою дает бог» (whom God gives not by measure) for the Synodal «не мерою дает Бог Духа» (God giveth not the Spirit by measure) (related). Strakhov's «Вопросы жизни» (1903) uses the sailor's compass once, otherwise: denying people's need of ideals is like denying a sailor's need of a guiding star or compass (p. 14; its OCR too damaged to quote).

    2. To explain human life not by the force of the spirit but by material force, or even by the joint action of both these forces, only because spiritual life cannot show itself without the material support of the body (by means of food, drink, and air), is just as mistaken as it would be to explain the motion of a locomotive not by the pressure of the steam but by the motion of the slide valve, which governs the timely admission of steam into the cylinder.

It is true that the steam could not pass at the right time from the boiler into the cylinder if the slide valve did not govern this. But the slide valve too, in its turn, could not move if this motion were not passed to it from the very driving axle that turns because of the pressure of that same steam.

Such too is the seemingly vicious circle into which people who consider the relation of the soul to the body superficially often fall. Very often they either see no way out of this seemingly vicious circle at all and fall into dualism, or else find it in recognizing matter as the sole foundation of life.

Not found. The thought (explaining human life by matter, or by matter and spirit together, because the life of the spirit needs the body's support of food, drink, and air, is as wrong as explaining a locomotive's motion by the slide valve that admits the steam rather than by the pressure of the steam; the valve itself is moved from the driving axle that the steam turns, and in this seemingly enchanted circle shallow thinkers fall into dualism or make matter the one basis of life) is in no online text of F. A. Strakhov (1861–1923), as with his other Circle thoughts from October to August. The Jubilee commentary (vol. 42) says Tolstoy corrected and much shortened Strakhov's reflections; this one is not in «На каждый день» or «Путь жизни».

Translation note. «Заколдованный круг», literally “a bewitched circle,” is the Russian idiom for a vicious circle.

    2. If God, as the object of our faith, is above our understanding, and we cannot encompass him with our reason, it does not yet follow that we should disdain the work of reason and think it harmful.

Although the objects of faith undoubtedly lie outside the circle of our understanding, and above it, even with regard to them reason matters so much that we can in no way do without it.

Probably from Strakhov's writings on faith and reason (he also read all the proofs of the Circle's first edition, per the Jubilee commentary). The Jubilee notes cite his collection 'Искание истины' only in the Посредник edition of 1911 (№ 785, with Tolstoy's introductory letter), though Tolstoy wrote in August 1910 that he had re-read the book, so an earlier text or manuscript existed. No online text of any of Strakhov's works was found, so the passage could not be checked.

    3. The question is not at all which of the two to choose: Christianity or socialism?

The two teachings cannot even be compared with each other — so different are they in essence.

Christianity teaches of the eternal meaning of the whole universe, of the divinity and therefore the indestructibility of our spiritual essence, of the calling of man, and, among other things, of the right way of satisfying his material needs that follows from this.

Socialism, compared with Christianity, is a small, secondary question of the material needs of the working class, unconnected with the main question of the meaning of human life.

One may ask questions about the compatibility of Christianity with socialism, but one cannot ask which of the two to choose: Christianity or socialism?

Not located; as in October and November, no online text of F. A. Strakhov's writings was found (his collection «Искание истины», Посредник 1911, is the likely home). This is the same Strakhov who read all the proofs of the Circle from February 1905 (Jubilee vol. 42 commentary), so the thought may have come from his manuscripts.
