Do men fear lest the mountains fall : Tradition is always uncertain. " Perhaps yes, perhaps no," is all we can say of it. Yet it is made the basis of Religion. Authority is taken for Truth, and not Truth for Authority.
Belief is made the Substance of Religion, as Authority its Sanction and Tradition its Ground.

6. Our church Christianity is built on empty and shaky foundations; those who rely on it are in constant danger and are always afraid of something. A strongly expressed doubt that shakes all its foundations calls forth thunder and lightning from the representatives of the church, and the better founded the doubts, the greater the alarm.
Do people fear that the mountains will give way? But church tradition is ready to crumble at any moment. “Maybe it is true, maybe not” — that is all that the people who rely on it can say of it. Nevertheless it has been made the foundation of religion. Authority is taken for truth, and blind trust has become the essence of religion.

There are many ways in which Christ may be denied:--one is that of the bold blasphemer, who, out of a base and haughty heart mocks, scoffing at that manly man, and spits upon the nobleness of Christ!
Religion is so dear to men, no scoffing word can silence that, and the brave soul of this young Nazarene has made itself so deeply felt that scorn and mockery of him are but an icicle held up against the summer's sun.
There is another way to deny him, and that is:--to call him Lord, and never do his bidding; to stifle free minds with his words; and with the authority of his name to cloak, to mantle, screen and consecrate the follies, errors, sins of men! From this we have much to fear.

1. Christ can be denied in different ways: first, one can blaspheme crudely, mock at greatness — but this way is not dangerous. Religion is too dear to people for anyone’s mockery to take it from them. But there is another way: to call Christ Lord and not keep his commandments; to stifle free thought with his words, and to cover, to sanctify with his name all the follies, errors, and sins of people. This second way is especially dangerous.

2. From Moses to Jesus a great intellectual and religious development took place among individuals and nations. From the time of Jesus to our own, this movement, in individuals and nations alike, has been still greater. Old errors have been cast off, and new truths have entered the consciousness of humanity. One man cannot be as great as humanity. If a great man is so far ahead of his fellows that they do not understand him, a time comes when they first catch up with him, then overtake him, and go so far ahead that they in their turn become incomprehensible to those who stand where the former great man stood; and then a new great man is needed, and he appears and opens the way onward.

4. Death is only one step in our continuous development. Our birth was just such a step, with this difference only: that birth is death to one form of being, and death is birth into another form of being.
Death is happiness for the dying man. In dying, you will cease to be mortal. I cannot look on this change with horror, as some people do. To my mind, death is a change for the better. Are we not mad when we talk of preparing for death? Our business is to live. He who knows how to live will know how to die as well. I want to live; our soul never tells us that we will die. The senses die, and it is the senses that created death. So is it worthwhile for reasonable people to trouble themselves about it?

9. Religion is the highest form of love.

He is the greatest person of the ages; the proudest achievement of the human race. He taught the absolute religion, love to God and man. That God has yet greater men in store I doubt not; to say this is not to detract from the majestic character of Christ, but to affirm the omnipotence of God. When they come, the old contest will be renewed, the living prophet stoned; the dead one worshipped. Be that as it may, there are duties he teaches us far different from those most commonly taught.
Had he conformed to what was told him of men; had he counselled only with flesh and blood; he had been nothing but a poor Jew--the world had lost that rich endowment of religious genius, that richest treasure of religious life, the glad tidings of the one religion, absolute and true. What if he had said, as others, "None can be greater than Moses, none so great?" He had been a dwarf; the spirit of God had faded from his soul! But he conferred with God, not men; took counsel of his hopes, not his fears.
Working for men, with men, by men, trusting in God, and pure as truth, he was not scared at the little din of church or state, and trembled not, though Pilate and Herod were made friends only to crucify him that was a born King of the world. Methinks I hear that lofty spirit say to you or me, poor brother, fear not, nor despair. The goodness actual in me is possible for all. God is near thee now as then to me; rich as ever in truth, as able to create, as willing to inspire.

1. Christ was a great man. He preached the true, universal religion — of love for God and for man. But I do not doubt that God has still greater men in the future. In saying this I do not diminish the greatness of Christ’s character, but affirm the almightiness of God. And when such men come, the old struggle will begin again: once more they will stone the living prophet and deify the dead one.
But however that may be, Christ teaches us now truths utterly opposed to those that are commonly taught. Had he made his teaching agree with what he was told about men, had he agreed only with flesh and blood, he would have been only a poor Jew, and the world would have lost the most precious treasure of religious life, the glad tidings of the one, universal and true religion.
What if he, like others, had said: no one can be higher and truer than Moses? He would have been nothing, and the spirit of God would have left his soul. But he took counsel not with men but with God; he listened to his hopes, not to his fears. He labored for men, with men and through men; he believed in God and, pure as Truth, feared neither church nor state, and was not dismayed when Pilate and Herod became friends only in order to crucify him. It always seems to me that I hear the voice of that lofty spirit saying to me and to you: “Do not fear, poor brother, and do not despair. The goodness that was in me is possible for you too. God is as near to you as he was near to me then, and as rich in truth, and as ready to inspire everyone who will serve him.”
