    Details

A likely source, not certain. Res gestae, XIV.10.13.

«Марцеллин» is most likely Ammianus Marcellinus; the Jubilee name index has no entry for it. In Constantius's speech to the soldiers: "for truth, set out plainly, is always quite simple" (an echo of Euripides, Phoenissae 469). Tolstoy's "words of truth" and "without ornament" are not in the Latin. A public-domain English (Yonge, 1862) was not saved.

Translation note. Tolstoy gives the name alone; whom it names is uncertain.
