Word for word. The Circle repeats Tolstoy's Thoughts of Wise Men (1903), where the maxim stands twice, and the same Russian is no. 25 among Vauvenargues's maxims in Rusanov's translation in «Избранные мысли Лабрюйера, с прибавлением избранных афоризмов и максим Ларошфуко, Вовенарга и Монтескье» (Посредник, 1908), Jubilee vol. 40. 2. 4. Человеколюбие включает справедливость.

    Вовенарг.

    4. Love of humanity includes justice.

    Vauvenargues.

Probably from Réflexions et maximes · reworded by Tolstoy .
Not in Leo Tolstoy as Editor

No maxim of Vauvenargues says that love of humanity includes justice; the nearest, maxim 28, “On ne peut être juste, si on n’est humain,” makes humanity a condition of justice, so the source is only a candidate.

A likely source, not certain. Réflexions et maximes, Maxim 28 (Œuvres, ed. D.-L. Gilbert, Paris, 1857).

No maxim of Vauvenargues says that humanity includes justice. The nearest is maxim 28, 'On ne peut être juste, si on n'est humain' (one cannot be just without being humane), which Rusanov's selection, revised by Tolstoy in 1907, renders «Нельзя быть справедливым, не быв человечным». If it is the source, the Circle turns it round: Vauvenargues makes humanity a condition of justice, «Человеколюбие включает справедливость» makes justice a part of love of mankind. Searched: Réflexions et maximes 1–330 (Gilbert's text), the three volumes of Vauvenargues's Œuvres morales (1874) for 'justice' with 'humanité' or 'humain', Boiste's Dictionnaire universel (1851, which prints maxim 28 under his name), and web searches in French and English.

Word for word: 'Peu de malheurs sont sans ressource' (few misfortunes are without remedy) is «Мало бывает несчастий безысходных». The Circle repeats Tolstoy's Thoughts of Wise Men (1903), March 15; the commentary of Jubilee vol. 40 says its Vauvenargues for that day came from the «Иллюстрированный настольный календарь т-ва «Просвещение» на 1902 год», not online. Gilbert prints the maxim in square brackets, his mark for the nearly two hundred maxims he published for the first time. Not in the Wikisource text of maxims 1–330 or in Rusanov's Russian selection (Jubilee vol. 40). No public-domain English found.
