The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text.

One sentence of Herzen's third letter «К старому товарищу» (1869), with "from within" (изнутри) for Herzen's "within" (внутри). Herzen goes on: "Strange as it is, experience shows that peoples bear the forced burden of slavery more easily than the gift of too much freedom." The Jubilee list of the Circle's sources names only «С того берега» for Herzen; the sentence is not in it. In «На каждый день», for the same date, Tolstoy adds "by force" (силою). No public-domain English translation of the letters was found.

    10. If only people were willing, instead of saving the world, to save themselves; instead of freeing humanity, to free themselves — how much they would do to save the world and to free humanity!

    Herzen.

    What changed

Herzen’s last words, “для освобождения человека,” for the freeing of man, become “to free humanity,” repeating the word of the sentence’s first half.

Herzen's sentence, word for word but for its last word: Herzen ends «для спасения мира и для освобождения человека» (for the saving of the world and the freeing of man); Tolstoy writes «человечества» (mankind), the word of the sentence's first half, and ends with an exclamation mark. The 1905 edition (saved: sources/herzen-sochineniia-1905/sochineniia05herz_djvu.txt, vol. V, p. 252) also reads «человека». The sentence follows Herzen's argument that, with the world around us shifting, we will find no harbor except in ourselves, in the consciousness of our boundless freedom (first excerpt). The Circle sets it on June 30, which the Jubilee commentary (vol. 42) says was given to Tolstoy's views on the reconstruction of society. No public-domain English was found.

Translation note. The Russian italic is broken only at the comma and the dash; it is set here as one span.

    1. So long as the educated minority, swallowing up the lives of generations, barely guessed why life was so easy for it, so long as the majority, working day and night, did not quite guess that all the profit of the work was for others, and both took this for the natural order — the world of anthropophagy could hold together. People often take a prejudice, a habit, for the truth — and then it does not chafe them. But once they have understood that their truth is nonsense, it is all over. Then only by force can a man be made to do what he considers absurd.

Herzen's two sentences, word for word, with the second divided: Tolstoy ends a sentence at «дело кончено» (the matter is finished) and begins «Тогда только силою…» (then only by force…), and changes only the punctuation. Herzen goes on: institute fast days without faith, and to eat lenten food becomes as unbearable as meat to a believer. The passage follows his remark that aristocracy is a more or less educated anthropophagy, the cannibal, the landowner, and the factory owner differing only in degree, which explains Tolstoy's «мир антропофагии» (the world of anthropophagy). 4. 6.

    6. The freedom of the individual is the greatest of all things; on it, and on it alone, can the freedom of a people grow. A man must respect his freedom in himself and honor it no less than in his neighbor or in a whole people.

Two consecutive sentences from Herzen's farewell letter to his Moscow friends. Tolstoy changes 'the real will of the people' (действительная воля народа) to 'the freedom of the people' and modernises 'не менее, как' to 'не менее, чем'; the italic 'only on it' loses its emphasis. No pre-1929 English exists: Garnett's 'My Past and Thoughts' does not include 'From the Other Shore' (first English 1956).

    4. All constitutional charters lead nowhere; they are contracts between master and slaves. The task is not that the slaves should be better off, but that there should be no slaves.
