Nonresistance to Evil by Violence

The end of Adin Ballou’s “Non-Resistant Catechism” (1844), in the Russian Tolstoy made of it for The Kingdom of God Is Within You (1890–1893), here set as prose and changed and shortened again. Tolstoy’s note on Ballou follows the signature.

“You have heard that it was said: ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you: ‘Do not resist evil’” (Matthew 5:38, 39).

Christ teaches us not to resist evil. This teaching is true, because it tears evil out by the root from the hearts of both the wronged and the wrongdoer. This teaching forbids doing what makes the evil in the world multiply rather than cease. When one man attacks another and wrongs him, he thereby kindles in the other a feeling of hatred, the root of all evil. What, then, are we to do to quench this feeling of evil? Are we really to do the very thing that arouses this feeling of evil — to wrong the other, that is, to repeat the bad deed? To act so is to strengthen the devil instead of casting him out. Satan cannot be cast out by Satan, injustice cannot be cleansed by injustice, and evil cannot be overcome by evil.

Therefore nonresistance to evil by evil is the only means of overcoming evil. It kills the evil feeling both in the one who did the evil and in the one who suffered it.

“But,” people ask, “even if the idea of the teaching is right, is it practicable?” — Just as practicable as any good that the law of God prescribes. The good cannot be practiced in all circumstances without self-renunciation, privation, suffering, and, in extreme cases, without the loss of life itself. But whoever values life more than doing the will of God is already dead to the one true life. Such a man, trying to save his life, will lose it. Besides, and as a general rule, where nonresistance costs the sacrifice of one life or of some essential good of life, resistance costs a thousand such sacrifices.

Nonresistance preserves, resistance destroys.

It is incomparably safer to act justly than unjustly; to bear a wrong than to resist it by violence — safer even with regard to the present life. If all people refrained from resisting evil by evil, our world would be blessed.

“But when only a few act so, what will become of them?” — If even one man alone acted so, and all the rest agreed to crucify him, would it not be more glorious for him to die praying for his enemies than to be a king wearing a crown spattered with the blood of the slain? But whether one or thousands of people have firmly resolved not to resist evil by evil, it is all the same: whether among enlightened neighbors or among savage ones, they are far safer from violence than those who rely on violence. The robber, the murderer, the swindler will sooner leave them in peace than those who resist with arms. Those who have taken the sword will perish by the sword, but those who seek peace, who act in a friendly and harmless way, who forget and forgive wrongs, for the most part enjoy peace, or, if they die, die with blessings on them.

Thus, if everyone kept the commandment of nonresistance, there would plainly be neither wrong nor crime. If such people were a majority, they would establish the rule of love and goodwill even over those who do wrong, never resisting evil by evil, never using violence. If such people were a fairly numerous minority, they would have such a moral influence on society that every cruel punishment would be abolished, and violence and enmity would give way to peace and love. If they were only a small minority, they would seldom suffer anything worse than the contempt of the world, while the world, without itself noticing it and without being grateful for it, would grow steadily wiser and better.

And if, in the very worst case, some members of the minority were persecuted to death, those who perished for the truth would leave behind them their teaching, already hallowed by the blood of their martyrdom.

Ballou*

* Adin Ballou, the leader of one of the American religious communities, who died in August 1890, wrote and published books for 50 years, chiefly on the question of nonresistance to evil by violence. In these writings, admirable for the clarity and beauty of their exposition, the question is examined from every possible side. One of his chief works is the “Catechism of Nonresistance.”

The end of Adin Ballou’s “Non-Resistant Catechism” (1844), in the Russian Tolstoy made of it for The Kingdom of God Is Within You (1890–1893), here set as prose and changed and shortened again. Tolstoy’s note on Ballou follows the signature.

The Gospel words Ballou quotes in his fourth answer (Matthew 5:38-40, in the King James wording), cut to the first two verses and set at the head of the reading with their reference. The Circle's words are those of the Synodal translation, word for word. In vol. 28 they stand inside the answer as «Вы слышали, что сказано древним: око за око, зуб за зуб»; «древним» is in neither Ballou ("it hath been said") nor the Synodal text of 5:38.

Ballou’s own words
What is there then so absurd and unreasonable in the doctrine?
It is one of the most consistent and reasonable doctrines ever taught to mankind. It forbids them to resist evil by doing what will perpetuate and aggravate evil, in order that they may effectually remove the very root of it both from their own and their neighbor's bosom.
He who aggressively injures another fosters hatred, the root of all evil. To injure another because he had injured us, under pretense of suppressing evil, is to repeat the mischief both on him and ourselves: it is to reproduce, or at least nourish, the very same demon we affect to cast out.
Satan cannot cast out Satan, nor wrong expurgate wrong, nor evil overcome evil.

Changed twice over. In «Царство божие» (vol. 28) Tolstoy replaced Ballou's question "What is there then so absurd and unreasonable in the doctrine?" with one on the teaching's chief meaning («В чем главное значение учения о непротивлении?»), left out the opening of the answer ("Sure enough, what is there? It is one of the most consistent and reasonable doctrines ever taught to mankind"), and otherwise followed it closely. The Circle recasts that answer as prose and changes it again. Ballou's root of evil removed "both from their own and their neighbor's bosom" (vol. 28 «как из своего сердца, так и из сердца ближнего») is torn out «из сердца и обиженного и обижающего». "perpetuate and aggravate" (vol. Two questions are added: «Что же нам сделать, чтобы потушить это чувство зла? And "to reproduce, or at least nourish, the very same demon we affect to cast out" (vol. The last sentence keeps Ballou's three clauses, recast impersonally («Сатану нельзя изгнать сатаною...»).

Changed. Vol. 28 renders Ballou's three sentences closely. The Circle opens with «Поэтому», Ballou's "Therefore", which vol. 28 lacks; makes "true non-resistance" «непротивление злу злом» and "the only effectual resistance of evil" «единственное средство победить зло»; leaves out "It bruises the serpent's head"; and has the evil disposition killed «и в том, кто сделал зло, и в том, кто понес его», where Ballou has it killed and ended.

The theory is unexceptionable, but is it practicable?
It is as practicable as any other absolute virtue enjoined in the law of God. Neither this nor any other can be faithfully adhered to under all circumstances, without self-denial, privation, suffering, and in extreme cases loss of life itself.
But he who holds this mortal life dearer than duty is already dead to the only life worth possessing. Such an one, in seeking to save his life, loses it.
The truth, however, is, that where non-resistance costs the sacrifice of one life, or of any one substantial good of life, its opposite costs thousands.

Faithful, with Tolstoy's own wording in a few places, all already in vol. 28: "dearer than duty" is «более, чем исполнением воли бога», "the only life worth possessing" «единственной истинной жизни», "as any other absolute virtue" «как всякое добро», "The theory is unexceptionable" «если мысль учения и верна», and "The truth, however, is" «Кроме того, и вообще». So if all were non-resistants, confessedly there would be none to harm or disturb.
If the great majority were so, then they would administer a government of love and good will, even to the injurious -- never resisting injury with injury -- never using an injurious force.
If a large majority were non-resistants, they would exert such an ameliorating moral influence on Society, that all extreme and cruel punishments would be discarded, and general peace made the policy of government.
If in a small minority, demeaning themselves peaceably, they will seldom experience any thing worse than the contempt of the world; which, without being sensible of it, or grateful for it, will all the time be rendered wiser and better by their testimony.

In vol. 28 Tolstoy turned "general peace made the policy of government" into «а насилие и вражда заменились бы миром и любовью», which leaves out the government, and Ballou's "by their testimony" into «от этого тайного воздействия»; Ballou's "demeaning themselves peaceably" is left out. Where the transcription reads "If a large majority were non-resistants", after "If the great majority were so", vol. 28 has a minority («довольно многочисленное меньшинство»); the 1844 printing was not seen to tell whether the transcription is at fault. The Circle differs from vol. 28 in three places: «оказали бы такое нравственное влияние» for «произвели бы такое исправительное нравственное действие» (Ballou: "exert such an ameliorating moral influence"); «испытывало» for «испытало»; and «от этого тайного воздействия» left out.
