From V. Olkhovsky’s «Назарены в Венгрии» (The Nazarenes in Hungary); we have not found a copy of it.
The essence of the Nazarenes’ teaching consists in following the teaching of the New Testament, above all the Sermon on the Mount. They recognize no hierarchy, no written teaching, and no organization of any kind; their teaching is not settled but changing, and differs in dogma from community to community; even in one and the same community there are members who believe in their own way. But the moral teaching is one and the same for all. All of them lead a strictly moral and abstemious life. They hold the chief rules of life to be industriousness, meekness in dealing with people, the humble bearing of wrongs, and refraining from any part in violence. They do not recognize the courts, do not pay taxes voluntarily, do not take oaths, and refuse military service; and in general they regard the state as an institution they have no need of.
Into their communities, which are made up for the most part of working people, the Nazarenes receive only those who are “risen in spirit,” who have repented and are living a new life. And so the children of Nazarenes are not counted as Nazarenes until they come to the age of discretion and themselves wish to join the community of believers.
The Nazarenes’ refusal of military duty brings down on them the persecution of the Austrian government. But the Nazarenes hold firmly to their conviction that military service is incompatible with Christianity, and meekly bear the punishments laid on them, without betraying the law of Christ.
The Nazarenes base their refusals of military duty on the words of Christ: “But I say to you: do not resist evil” (Matthew 5:38), and “love your enemies, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who wrong you” (Matthew 5:44).
The Nazarenes, simple peasant lads, often astonish their persecutors by the firmness with which they endure every kind of torment. And it is not only recruits who act so, but reservists too, that is, men who became Nazarenes after they had already completed their active service. When they are called up for maneuvers, they refuse to take weapons in their hands. Knowing that for this they may be sentenced to imprisonment for life, they arrange their households beforehand so that the wife can manage alone, and take leave of their families as if forever. Their families for the most part sympathize with their martyrdom.
Thus, some years ago, Joga Radovanov (a Serb) from Vechbas (Bačka), having been enrolled at Pest in the 6th Regiment, 6th Company, refused to take up arms, saying that his faith did not allow it. The court sentenced him to 2 years’ imprisonment. His elder brother, sentenced to imprisonment in 1894, was already serving his 10th year. The mother of the two brothers came to visit the younger. The authorities would not allow her to see him. She stood weeping in the prison yard. And at that moment she saw her son’s face at one of the windows and at once cried out to him: “Sine moj zlati, ne moj za Boga uzeti pušku! (My golden son, for God’s sake don’t you take a gun!)”
At the end of August 1895 the reservists of the Szeged reserve regiment were called up. When rifles were being handed out to the reservists, two of them would not accept them, because, as they said, the Nazarene faith did not permit it. Captain Olcsvári began telling them that God loves the army, and that after all they were going not to war but only to maneuvers, where no one would shed blood. To this the Nazarenes answered: “But they are taking us to maneuvers just to teach us to kill people.”
The captain tried to work on them by fear. He told them that the autumn before a Nazarene had behaved in the same way, and had been punished several times and at last shut up for 17 years in a fortress prison.
“Let them shoot us,” the Nazarenes answered calmly, “but we cannot go against the laws of God.”
Other reservists went to the families of these Nazarenes, and their wives, who were not yet in the sect, begged their husbands in tears to submit to authority; but they would not agree. To begin with, the captain put them under strict arrest for 10 days. When they were led away, they parted from their families weeping.
“God be with you,” they said. “They will bury us alive for the sake of the Lord God, for the sake of holy innocence and purity of soul, because people must be like the lambs of God.”
Franko Novak was to do his military service at Temesvár. When he was taken with the other recruits to the drill ground for the first time, he refused to accept a weapon. Noticing the commotion around Novak, a general who was on the drill ground rode up to the spot and asked what had happened. He was told. The general kindly asked Novak why he would not take a weapon. Novak took a small Gospel out of his pocket and said: “The higher authorities allow this little book to be printed, and they do not forbid living by the precepts set out in it either. And in this book it is said: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ I do not accept arms because I want to follow the precepts of the Savior.”
The general heard Novak out calmly, then said to him: “But this same little book says: to Caesar what is Caesar’s, to God what is God’s.”
At first Novak was taken aback and said nothing; but then, after thinking it over, he took off his army cap, his weapon, and his uniform, and, laying it all down, said: “There, all this is His Majesty Caesar’s; and so I give back to him all that is his.”
In 1897 a decrepit old man came to the town notary of Velika Kokinda. In his hands was a sheet of paper: a certificate of his right to a pension as a disabled veteran of ’48.
“Be so good as to write down, Mr. Notary,” said the old man, “that I renounce my pension.”
The astonished notary asked the old man:
“What is this, Vanda? Have you found a treasure?”
“True, quite true, Mr. Notary,” answered the old man. “I have found a treasure. I have found, Mr. Notary, my Lord, who is dearer to me than all the treasures of this world, and who is not pleased that his servant should live on bread obtained for him by arms.”
In spite of the severe measures the government takes against them, the Nazarenes do not change their faith.

Translation notes
- The first saying is Matthew 5:39, though the Russian gives 5:38. The second is 5:44 shortened; the KJV reads: “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.” ↑
- Vechbas: so the Russian; probably Verbász, now Vrbas in Serbia, in the Bačka. The mother’s words are Serbian, written in Russian letters in the original; the words in parentheses are the book’s own translation of them. ↑
- The Russian opens a quotation at “Love your neighbor” and never closes it; it is closed here after “yourself.” ↑
- Matthew 22:21. ↑
- Кесарь is both Caesar and the old Russian word for an emperor, like the German Kaiser. ↑
- Velika Kokinda: so the Russian; probably Velika Kikinda (Hungarian Nagykikinda), now Kikinda in Serbia. “Of ’48”: of 1848, the year of the Hungarian revolution and war of independence. ↑
