    4. Their elders may well explain to children that one must not be cruel to animals, or to any weak creatures at all. But a child has only to step into the kitchen to see at once the slaughtered and plucked hens and geese. What good, then, can fine discourses on morality do children, so sharply contradicted as they are by the barbarous and immoral deeds of grown-ups done before their very eyes?

    Struve.

Gustav (von) Struve (1805-1870), the Baden revolutionary of 1848 and vegetarian writer, as the Jubilee index has it. Tolstoy keeps the kitchen (Williams: "Pigeons, Hens, and Geese slaughtered and plucked", Tolstoy: hens and geese) and the closing question, and drops the street of hung carcasses and the slaughter-house between them, and the remark that men who abuse their power over animals do the same to weaker men. Tolstoy probably read it in the Russian translation of Williams, «Этика пищи» (Posrednik, 1893), which the Jubilee commentary lists, or in T. Tolstaya's vegetarian anthology (1903). The German was not checked word for word: the scans of Das Seelenleben (1873 ed.), Pflanzenkost (1869) and Mandaras Wanderungen consulted have no searchable text.
