The Order of the World is Félicité de Lamennais’s reflection on John 15 in Les Évangiles (1846), shortened and changed in places; The Attitude of the First Christians to War was compiled by N. N. Gusev and edited by Tolstoy, its quotations traced to the Latin and Greek; the peasant Pyotr Olkhovik’s letter is from his letters, printed in London in 1897, with two long passages cut. The last two were cut by the censor and first printed in 1917.

I. УСТРОЙСТВО МИРА

I. The Order of the World

The world is society such as it was in the time of Jesus and such as in essence it still is today, since eighteen centuries of Christianity have not changed its foundations, but have only softened their manifestations. Despite the change in its outward forms, this society rests everywhere on force and self-love.

Men command only because they have power; they oppress, they torment, because they command for themselves. Such is the world, and between the world and Jesus there is an eternal struggle, because what Jesus wants is the direct opposite of what the world wants. Jesus wants people to be free; he wants them, being equal before their common Father, to be equal before one another as well; he wants brotherly love to unite them into one family. The world, for its part, wants almost all to be subject to a few; it wants not brothers, but the small and the great — the small, stripped of every right, and the great, to whom the small would belong and who would dispose of them as they please.

Jesus wants power to be service; the world wants it to be dominion. Therefore Jesus condemns the world, and the world hates Jesus, and this hatred, extending to the disciples of Jesus, exposes them to persecution from the world. If the world tolerated them, if there were any bond whatever between it and them, they would be not disciples of Jesus, but traitors to his teaching, accomplices of the one who betrayed him with a kiss.

And so you, you who want what Jesus wanted, you whom he chose to carry on his work, be ready for what awaits you in the world; but know this too: the world will not be the stronger to the end, but will be conquered, because the truth that is to conquer is already beginning to shine before the eyes of all, is beginning to stir every conscience, and the world tries in vain to kill it, as it killed Jesus. The times are drawing near; a muffled murmur foretells liberation; on every side is heard the snapping of breaking chains; the strong are troubled — they feel that they are growing weak; and the weak raise their heads. The last battle must be fought. Let everyone stand firm in this battle, which decides whether mankind will be liberated by Christ, as he promised, or will forever be the slave of the sons of him who was a murderer from the beginning.

II.

II. The Attitude of the First Christians to War

“The world runs mad in mutual bloodshed, and killing, which is held a crime when people commit it singly, is called a virtue if it is done by a multitude.” So wrote the famous Cyprian in the third century, speaking of the soldiery.

The whole Christian community of the first centuries, up to the fifth century, regarded war in the same way. Through its leaders, the Christian community plainly acknowledged that all killing is forbidden to Christians, and therefore killing in war as well.

The philosopher Tatian, who became a Christian in the second century, holds killing in war to be as impermissible for Christians as any other killing, and holds the military wreath of honor unseemly for a Christian. In the same century Athenagoras of Athens says that Christians not only never kill, but even avoid being present at killings.

In the third century Clement of Alexandria contrasts “the peaceful race of Christians” with the pagan “warlike” peoples. But the famous Origen expressed the Christians’ aversion to war most clearly of all. Applying to Christians the words of Isaiah, that a time will come when people will beat their swords into sickles and their spears into plows, he says quite definitely: “We do not take up arms against any nation, we do not learn the art of war, for through Jesus Christ we have become children of peace.” Answering Celsus’s charge against the Christians that they evade military service, so that, in Celsus’s opinion, if the Roman Empire should ever become Christian, it would perish, Origen says that Christians fight more than others for the good of the emperor: they fight for him by good deeds, by prayer, and by their good influence on people. As for fighting with weapons, it is perfectly true, says Origen, that Christians do not fight alongside the emperor’s troops, and would not go even if the emperor compelled them to.

Tertullian, Origen’s contemporary, speaks just as decisively of the impossibility of a Christian’s being a soldier. “It is not fitting to serve both the sign of Christ and the sign of the devil,” he says of military service, “the fortress of light and the fortress of darkness; one soul cannot serve two masters. And how is one to make war without the sword, which the Lord himself has taken away? Can one really train with the sword, when the Lord has said that everyone who takes up the sword will perish by the sword? And how will a son of peace take part in battle?”

In the fourth century Lactantius says the same. “There must be no exception in God’s commandment that to kill a man is always a sin,” he says. “Christians are not permitted to bear arms, for their arms are truth alone.” The canons of the Egyptian church of the third century and the so-called “Testament of Our Lord Jesus Christ” absolutely forbid any Christian to enter military service, on pain of excommunication.

The “Acts of the Saints” hold many examples of Christian martyrs of the first centuries who suffered for refusing to go on serving in the Roman legions.

Thus Maximilian, brought before the conscription board, answered the proconsul’s first question, what his name was: “My name is Christian, and so I cannot fight.” In spite of this declaration he was enrolled as a soldier, but he refused to serve. He was told that he must choose between performing his military duty and death. He said: “I would sooner die, but I cannot fight.” He was handed over to the executioners.

Marcellus was a centurion in the Trajan legion. Having come to believe in the teaching of Christ and become convinced that war is an unchristian business, he took off his armor in sight of the whole legion, threw it on the ground, and declared that, having become a Christian, he could serve no longer. He was put in prison, but there too he said: “A Christian may not bear arms.” He was executed.

After Marcellus, Cassian, who served in the same legion, refused military service. He too was executed.

Under Julian the Apostate, Martin, who had been raised and grown up among soldiers, refused to go on with military service. When the emperor questioned him, he said only: “I am a Christian, and so I cannot fight.”

The First Ecumenical Council (325) clearly laid down a strict penance for Christians who had left the service and entered the army a second time. The actual words of this ruling, in the translation recognized by the Orthodox Church, are these:

“Those who were called by grace to the confession of the faith, and showed the first impulse of zeal, and laid aside their military belts, but afterward, as dogs, returned to their own vomit… let such, after three years of hearing the Scriptures in the porch, fall down before the church for ten years, asking forgiveness.”

Christians who remained in the army were charged with the duty of not killing enemies in time of war. As late as the fourth century Basil the Great recommends that soldiers guilty of breaking this ruling be kept from communion for three years.

Thus not only in the first three centuries of Christianity, during the persecutions of the Christians, but also in the first period of Christianity’s triumph over paganism, when Christianity had been recognized as the dominant religion, the religion of the state, the conviction still held among Christians that war is incompatible with Christianity. Ferrutius stated this definitely and decisively (and was executed for it):

“Christians are not permitted to shed blood, even in a just war and at the command of Christian sovereigns.”

In the fourth century Lucifer, Bishop of Cagliari, teaches that Christians must defend even the good dearest to them — their faith — “not by killing others, but by their own death.” Paulinus, Bishop of Nola, who died in 431, still threatened eternal torments for serving Caesar with arms in hand.

Such was the view of the Christians of the first four centuries on the relation of Christianity to military service.

III.

III. The Letter of the Peasant Olkhovik, Who Refused Military Service

“On the 15th day of October, 1895, I was called up for military duty. When my turn came to draw a lot, I said I would not draw a lot. The officials looked at me, then talked among themselves and asked me why I would not draw.

“I answered that it was because I would not take the oath and would not take a gun.

“They said that was for later, but the lot had to be drawn.

“I refused again. Then they told the headman to draw the lot. The headman drew it; it was No. 674. They wrote it down.

“In comes the district military commander, calls me into the office, and asks: ‘Who taught you all this, that you don’t want to take the oath?’

“I answered: ‘I learned it myself, reading the Gospel.’

“He says: ‘I don’t believe you understood the Gospel that way by yourself; why, everything in it is hard to understand; to understand it you have to study a lot.’

“To that I said that Christ did not teach learned wisdom, because even the simplest illiterate people understood his teaching.

“Then he told a soldier to take me to the detachment. The soldier and I went to the kitchen and had dinner there.

“After dinner they started asking me why I had not taken the oath.

“I said: ‘Because it says in the Gospel: do not swear at all.’

“They were surprised; then they asked: ‘Is that really in the Gospel? Go on, find it.’

“I found it and read it; they listened.

“‘It may be there, but you still have to take the oath, because they’ll torture you.’

“I said to that: ‘Whoever loses his earthly life will inherit eternal life.’

“On the 20th they stood me in line with the other young soldiers and told us the soldiers’ rules. I told them I would not do any of it. They asked: ‘Why?’

“I said: ‘Because, as a Christian, I will not bear arms and defend myself against enemies, because Christ told us to love our enemies too.’

“They said: ‘Are you the only Christian, then? Why, we’re Christians too.’

“I said: ‘About others I know nothing; I know only about myself, that Christ said to do what I am doing.’

“He said again: ‘If you won’t do your drill, I’ll have you rot in prison.’

“To that I said: ‘Do what you like with me, but I will not serve.’

“Today the commission held an inspection. The general said to the officers: ‘What convictions this whippersnapper has found, to refuse service! Millions serve, and he alone refuses. Give him a good flogging with the birch, then he’ll drop his convictions.’”

Olkhovik was arrested and exiled to the Yakutsk Region.

The reflection's first two sentences, close. «Основ» (foundations) stands for "le principe" (the principle) and «их проявления» (their manifestations) for "les effets" (the effects). "Sous des conditions qui varient" (under conditions that vary) is «Несмотря на изменение внешних форм» (despite the change of outward forms), and "elle repose toujours, elle repose partout" (it rests always, it rests everywhere) is «держится везде» (holds everywhere), without "toujours".

Lamennais's next sentences, in his order, changed in two places. (1) "On commande parce qu'on est le plus fort" (one commands because one is the strongest) is «Повелевают только потому, что имеют власть» (they command only because they have power): "le plus fort" becomes «имеют власть», and «только» (only) is added. (2) "Entre le monde et Jésus il y a guerre" (between the world and Jesus there is war) is «между миром и Иисусом вечная борьба» (between the world and Jesus there is an eternal struggle): "guerre" becomes «вечная борьба». Smaller changes: "on pressure" (they squeeze) is «мучают» (they torment); "comme une seule famille" (as it were one family) is «в одну семью» (into one family); "Le monde veut le contraire" (the world wants the contrary) is left out before «Мир же хочет подчинения почти всех некоторым».

Shortened. "Réprouve, condamne" (reproves, condemns) is one verb, «осуждает»; "aux siens" (to his own) is «на учеников Иисуса» (to the disciples of Jesus); "constamment" (constantly) is left out; "un lien, et bien plus encore une alliance quelconque" (a bond, and still more any alliance whatever) is «связь какая бы то ни было» (any bond whatever); "des apostats de sa doctrine" (apostates from his doctrine) is «изменниками его учению» (traitors to his teaching). The commentary's "two words struck" may be among these cuts, but it does not say which they were.

The rest of the reflection, to its end, changed in three places. (1) "Sachez ce qui vous attend dans le monde" (know what awaits you in the world) is «будьте готовы к тому, что ожидает вас в мире» (be ready for what awaits you in the world). (2) "Qu'il sera vaincu, qu'il l'est déjà" (that it will be vanquished, that it is already) is «а будет побежден» (but will be vanquished): "qu'il l'est déjà" is not in the Russian. (3) "La vérité ... commence à briller" (the truth ... begins to shine) is «уже начинает светиться» (already begins to shine), with «уже» (already) added, perhaps moved from the clause left out. Also: "qu'il a choisis d'au milieu du monde" (whom he chose from the midst of the world) is «которых он избрал» (whom he chose); "comme le craquement de fers qui se brisent" (as it were the cracking of irons that break) is «треск разрывающихся цепей» (the crack of chains breaking), without "comme"; and "les puissants troublés se sentent défaillir" (the mighty, troubled, feel themselves failing) is «сильные смущены — чувствуют, что они слабеют» (the strong are troubled; they feel that they grow weak). The last sentence is close. The "fils de celui qui fut homicide dès le commencement" are the sons of the devil, after John 8:44.

Cyprian, To Donatus § 6 (about 246), as he bids Donatus look down from a height on the world: the roads held by robbers, the seas by pirates, "wars scattered everywhere with the bloody horror of camps". The quotation is his next sentence, changed in two places. (1) "Madet orbis mutuo sanguine" (the world is wet with mutual blood) is «Безумствует мир во взаимном кровопролитии» (the world raves in mutual bloodshed): "madet" becomes «безумствует». (2) "Cum publice geritur" (when it is done publicly) is «если делается скопищем» (if it is done by a crowd). Gusev's frame, «говоря про воинство» (speaking of the army), narrows a sentence that follows robbers, pirates, and wars. Whether the changes are Gusev's or were already in Taube's book, which is not public domain and was not opened, cannot be told. In Tolstoy's «Закон насилия и закон любви» (1908, ch. X), which carries the whole of this compilation in nearly the same words, the quotation comes after Tertullian's, has «в массе» (in the mass) for «скопищем», and adds Cyprian's next sentence, "inpunitatem sceleribus adquirit non innocentiae ratio, sed saeuitiae magnitudo", as «Преступникам приобретает безнаказанность умножение ярости».

Gusev's own words, as Tolstoy edited them: the compiler's statement of his theme. The claim is Gusev's (or Taube's) summary; the reading's own witness for the fourth century, Basil (W.20), says the opposite (see there).

V. G. Chertkov, 1917), pp. 33-35.

Gusev's own words, as Tolstoy edited them, reporting two second-century apologists; no words of theirs are quoted. Athenagoras is reported fairly: in his Plea for the Christians (about 177), ch. 35, the Christians "cannot bear even to see a man put to death, though justly", and, "deeming that to see a man put to death is much the same as killing him", have given up the gladiatorial shows (Greek: «Οὓς γὰρ ἴσασιν οὐδ᾿ ἰδεῖν κἂν δικαίως φονευόμενον ὑπομένοντας» and «Ἀλλ᾿ ἡμεῖς, πλησίον εἶναι τὸ ἰδεῖν τὸν φονευόμενον τοῦ ἀποκτεῖναι νομίζοντες, ἀπηγορεύσαμεν τὰς τοιαύτας θέας», ed. Otto, 1857, saved in sources/athenagoras-legatio-greek/). The context is the arena; war is not named. Tatian is reported more loosely. His Address to the Greeks (about 165) has, in ch. 11, "τὴν στρατηγίαν παρῄτημαι" (I decline military command) and "στεφάνους ἔχειν οὐκ ἀγωνίζομαι" (I do not contend to win crowns, the wreaths of the games), and, in ch. 19, "You wish to make war, and you take Apollo as a counsellor of slaughter", where war and murder stand together. Neither says that killing in war is as forbidden as any killing, and the military wreath held unfit for a Christian is the subject of Tertullian's De corona (about 211), not of Tatian. X) has the same two sentences, beginning «Так, во втором веке, перешедший в христианство философ Татиан» and with «как всякое убийство» for «как и всякое убийство».

V. G. Chertkov, 1917), pp. 33-35.

Gusev's narrative, joined from three passages of Origen's Contra Celsum (about 248) and a phrase of Clement's, kept close in sense with small changes. (1) Clement: in the Paedagogus II.ii.32 (about 190-200) "the Scythians, the Celts, the Iberians, and the Thracians, all warlike races" (πολεμικὰ ... γένη, words he takes from Plato's Laws I, 637d) are given to drunkenness, while "we, the peaceful race" (ἡμεῖς δὲ τὸ εἰρηνικὸν γένος) drink sober cups; the contrast is about drinking, which Gusev leaves out. (2) Origen V.33, on Isaiah 2:4: "we no longer take sword against nation, nor do we learn war any more, having become, for the sake of Jesus, sons of peace". The Russian, «Мы не поднимаем оружия ни против какого народа, мы не учимся искусству воевать, ибо через Иисуса Христа мы сделались детьми мира», drops "no longer" (οὐκέτι), has «оружия» (arms) for μάχαιραν (sword), and «через Иисуса Христа» (through Jesus Christ) for διὰ τὸν Ἰησοῦν (for the sake of Jesus). (3) Celsus's charge, VIII.68: if all did as the Christians, the emperor would be left alone and the world would fall to the most lawless barbarians; Gusev's «если только Римская империя сделается христианской, она погибнет» (if only the Roman empire became Christian, it would perish) is a free summary. (4) Origen's answer, VIII.73: "we fight for the emperor more than others do; we do not serve as soldiers under him, even if he presses us (κἂν ἐπείγῃ), but we fight on his behalf, forming an army of piety by our prayers to God". Gusev's «добрыми делами ... и добрым влиянием на людей» (good deeds and good influence on people) draws on VIII.74, where Christians do their countries more good by teaching their fellow citizens piety. The Circle's «Что же касается борьбы оружием, что совершенно справедливо, говорит Ориген, что христиане не сражаются» reads oddly; «Закон насилия и закон любви» (ch. X) has «то совершенно справедливо говорит Ориген, что» (then Origen says quite rightly that), which looks like the sound reading. Clement is dated to the third century in the reading; the Paedagogus was written about 190-200.

One quotation joined from two works of Tertullian. Its first half is De idololatria 19: "There is no agreement between the divine and the human oath (sacramentum), the standard of Christ and the standard of the devil, the camp of light and the camp of darkness; one soul cannot be owed to two, God and Caesar ... But how will he make war, nay, how will he serve even in peace, without the sword, which the Lord has taken away?" Its second half is De corona 11: "Shall it be lawful to make one's life in the sword, when the Lord declares that he who uses the sword shall perish by the sword? And shall the son of peace take part in battle, for whom it is not fitting even to go to law?" Changed: "sacramento divino et humano" (the divine and the human oath) is left out; "duobus deberi, deo et Caesari" (owed to two, God and Caesar) is «служить двум господам» (serve two masters), the words of Matthew 6:24; "immo quomodo etiam in pace militabit" (nay, how will he serve even in peace) is left out; "in gladio conversari" (to make one's life in the sword) is «упражняться мечом» (to practise with the sword); and "cui nec litigare conveniet" (for whom it is not fitting even to go to law) is left out. Tertullian wrote De idololatria about 200-206 and De corona about 211, as a contemporary of Origen, as the reading says. X) has «о невозможности христианина быть военным:» and a full stop after «крепости тьмы».

Lactantius, Divine Institutes VI.20.16-17 (about 304-311), on the commandment "Thou shalt not kill", in reverse order and changed. (1) "Ita neque militare iusto licebit, cuius militia est ipsa iustitia" (so it will not be lawful for a just man to serve as a soldier, since his warfare is justice itself) is «Носить оружие христианам не дозволено, ибо их оружие — только истина» (Christians may not bear arms, for their weapon is truth alone): "militare" (to serve as a soldier) becomes «носить оружие» (bear arms), "iusto" (a just man) «христианам» (Christians), "militia" (warfare, service) «оружие» (weapon), and "iustitia" (justice) «истина» (truth). Left out: that a just man may not bring a capital charge either, since killing by word is killing. (2) "In hoc dei praecepto nullam prorsus exceptionem fieri oportet, quin occidere hominem sit semper nefas" (in this precept of God no exception at all ought to be made; to kill a man is always wrong) is kept close, without the end, "quem deus sacrosanctum animal esse uoluit" (whom God willed to be a sacred creature). The last sentence, on the church order of Egypt and the Testament of Our Lord, is Gusev's report; it quotes nothing, and those texts were not traced. X) has «Носить оружие не дозволено» without «христианам».

The Acts of Maximilian, executed at Theveste in Numidia on 12 March 295, retold with three sayings, each changed. (1) Asked his name by the proconsul Dion, Maximilian answers "Quid autem vis scire nomen meum? Mihi non licet militare, quia Christianus sum" (Why do you want to know my name? It is not lawful for me to serve as a soldier, because I am a Christian); the Russian has «Мое имя христианин, и потому я сражаться не могу» (My name is Christian, and so I cannot fight): his question about his name becomes an answer, and "militare" (to serve as a soldier) becomes «сражаться» (to fight). (2) Told "Milita ne pereas" (serve, lest you perish), he answers "Non milito. Caput mihi praecide, non milito saeculo; sed milito Deo meo" (I will not serve. Cut off my head: I do not serve the world, I serve my God); the Russian has «Лучше умру, но не могу сражаться» (I would rather die, but I cannot fight). (3) The rest is narrative: he was not enrolled but measured for enrolment (incumetur) and ordered to be given the soldier's leaden seal, which he refused; «Его отдали палачам» (he was handed to the executioners) stands for the sentence "gladio animadverti placuit" (it is decided that he be put to the sword). The Acts are quoted from Ruinart's collection, in the Ratisbon reprint of 1859. Mason's English is a retelling that translates the dialogue closely. X) has «Мое имя — христианин».

(2) «Поверив в учение Христа и убедившись в том, что война — нехристианское дело» (having come to believe Christ's teaching and become convinced that war is unchristian) is Gusev's: in the Acts he is already a Christian, and he acts at the feast of the emperor's birthday, holding its banquets and sacrifices to be profane ("profana reputans illa convivia"), and refuses to serve "if such is the condition of soldiers, that they are forced to sacrifice to the gods and the emperors". (3) He threw down his military belt "coram signis legionis" (before the standards of the legion), and his centurion's vine-staff and arms; «в виду всего легиона» (in sight of the whole legion) is near. (4) «Его посадили в тюрьму, но он и там говорил: «Нельзя христианину носить оружие»» (he was put in prison, but there too he said, "A Christian may not bear arms"): the words are his answer at his trial before Agricolanus, "Non enim decebat Christianum hominem molestiis saecularibus militare, qui Christo Domino militat" (it was not fitting for a Christian, who serves as a soldier of Christ the Lord, to serve in the troubles of the world); "militare" becomes «носить оружие» and the reason is left out. He was sentenced to the sword. X) has «Его послали в тюрьму» (he was sent to prison).

Gusev's own words, as Tolstoy edited them, and not accurate. By the Passion of Cassian, which Ruinart prints after the Acts of Marcellus, Cassian was the court's shorthand writer (exceptor) at Marcellus's trial, not a soldier of his legion: when he saw the judge pronounce the death sentence, he cried out against it, threw his stylus and tablets to the ground, was imprisoned, and on 3 December 298 was executed after answers like Marcellus's. He refused to take down a sentence, not military service. X) spells the name «Кассиан»; the Circle has «Касьян».

Sulpicius Severus's Life of St Martin (written about 397), chs. 2 and 4, retold and changed. (1) Martin's answer, "Christi ego miles sum: pugnare mihi non licet" (I am Christ's soldier: it is not lawful for me to fight), is «Я — христианин и потому не могу сражаться» (I am a Christian and so cannot fight): "Christi miles" (Christ's soldier) becomes «христианин». (2) «Сказал только» (he said only this) leaves out the rest of his speech, "hitherto I have served you; let me now serve God; let him who is going to fight take your donative", and his offer, when accused of cowardice, to stand unarmed before the enemy's line. (3) «При Юлиане Отступнике» and «на допросе, сделанном ему императором» (at an interrogation by the emperor): the scene is the giving of a donative to the troops near Worms (apud Vangionum civitatem) in 356, under Julian as Caesar, before he became emperor and renounced Christianity; it was no interrogation, and Martin asked for his discharge. (4) «Воспитавшийся и выросший в военной среде» (brought up in military surroundings) rests on ch. 2: his father was "miles primum, post tribunus militum" (first a soldier, afterwards a military tribune), and Martin was enrolled at fifteen as a veteran's son. Canon 12 of Nicaea in the Russian Church's translation (the Книга правил, here as printed in the Russian edition of Milaš's commentary), cut at «...»: left out are the words on those who used money and gifts to get back their military rank («так что некоторые и сребро употребляли, и посредством даров достигли возстановления в воинский чин»; Greek "ὡς τινάς καὶ ἀργύρια προέσθαι, καὶ βενεφικίοις κατορθῶσαι τὸ ἀναστρατεύσασθαι"). Small differences from the Russian: «исповедыванию» for «исповеданию», «10 лет» for «десять лет», «к церкви» for «в церкви», and «по трилетнем слушании Писания» for «по трилетном времени слушания писаний». «Прося прощения» (asking pardon) is in the Russian church text; the Greek has only "ὑποπιπτέτωσαν" (let them be prostrators, the third grade of penitents). The canon concerns those who had laid aside "τὰς ζώνας" (the military belts) and then went back "like dogs to their own vomit"; it does not say why they had left. Milaš's commentary reads it as concerning those who left the army to keep their faith and then bought their way back, renouncing it. X) has «Благодатью ...

Gusev's own words, as Tolstoy edited them, and they misreport Basil. Basil's three years' abstention is advice for those who had killed in war; the "постановление" (rule) not to kill enemies that Gusev's soldiers are said to break is not in the canon, and no source for it was found. X) has the same two sentences.

Gusev's own words, as Tolstoy edited them. (Ferrutius) was not identified. Not found. No early Christian text with these words, "it is not lawful for Christians to shed blood, even in a just war and at the command of Christian rulers", was found, under Ferrutius or another name. A saying about Christian rulers and the just war cannot belong to a martyr of the pagan persecutions, and sounds like a later summary of a position rather than a quotation. The reading's source for it is presumably Taube's book (1905), which is not public domain and was not opened. X) has the same words.

Searched: Ruinart, Acta primorum martyrum sincera (Ratisbon, 1859): its index has Ferreolus of Vienne and Ferreolus and Ferrutio of Besançon; the Passion of Ferreolus of Vienne, a military tribune, was read, and has his "adversus noxios, non adversus Christianos militare proposui" (I resolved to fight against wrongdoers, not against Christians), not these words. Harnack, Militia Christi (1905), and C. J. Cadoux, The Early Christian Attitude to War (1919), searched for Ferrutius and Ferreolus: neither has him. Web searches in English and Russian for Ferrutius with military service, the just war, and Christian princes, and for «Ферруций»: nothing. Not searched: the Acta Sanctorum for 28 October (Ferrutius of Mainz).

V. G. Chertkov, 1917), pp. 33-35.

Gusev's narrative, joined from two Latin writers. (1) Lucifer, bishop of Cagliari, in Moriundum esse pro Dei filio (about 360), addressed to the emperor Constantius II, whom he charges with defending the Arian doctrine by the sword: "you think nothing in human affairs is more excellent than religion and that it must be defended with all force; you defend it with the sword, but we know that religion is to be defended not by killing but by dying for God (non occidendo, sed moriendo pro deo), and by bearing all these evils you inflict". The quoted words, «не убийством других, а собственной смертью» (not by killing others but by one's own death), are close; «pro deo» (for God) is left out, and the context is the emperor's persecution of the Nicene bishops, not war. (2) Paulinus of Nola (died 431) is reported, not quoted. His Letter 25, to the soldier Crispinianus, urges him to leave the army: "if we love this world more and choose to serve Caesar rather than Christ, we shall pass afterwards not to Christ but to gehenna", and "he who serves with the sword is the minister of death". «Грозил вечными муками за службу кесарю с оружием в руках» (threatened eternal torment for serving Caesar with arms) is a fair summary. No public-domain English of either letter was found. X) has «проповедует» (preaches) where the Circle has «учит» (teaches).

IX.

The closing sentence is the editor's, not the peasant's: it sums up the end of the story in the third person. In «Одумайтесь!» (ch. IX) the extract goes on to Olkhovik's journey to the Amur, the soldier Kirill Sereda who took his part on the steamer, and «Середу арестовали и вместе c Ольховиком сослали в Якутскую область, где они и теперь находятся» (Sereda was arrested and, with Olkhovik, exiled to the Yakutsk region, where they still are); the Circle keeps only Olkhovik's arrest and exile.
