The Repentant Sinner

Tolstoy’s own legend (1886), reprinted whole; five words differ from his text of 1886.

And he said to Jesus: Remember me, Lord, when you come into your kingdom! And Jesus said to him: Truly I say to you, this very day you will be with me in paradise.

(Luke 23:42–43)

A man lived in the world seventy years, and he lived his whole life in sin. And this man fell ill and did not repent. And when death came, in his last hour he wept and said: “Lord! As you forgave the thief on the cross, forgive me!” He had only time to say it — and his soul departed. And the sinner’s soul loved God and believed in his mercy and came to the doors of paradise.

And the sinner began to knock and to ask to be let into the kingdom of heaven.

And he heard a voice from behind the door: “What man is knocking at the doors of paradise? And what deeds has this man done in his life?”

And the voice of the accuser answered and listed all the sinful deeds of this man. And it named no good deeds at all.

And the voice from behind the door answered: “Sinners cannot enter the kingdom of heaven. Go away from here.”

And the man said: “Lord! I hear your voice, but I do not see your face, and I do not know your name.”

And the voice answered: “I am the apostle Peter.”

And the sinner said: “Have pity on me, Apostle Peter; remember human weakness and the mercy of God. Were you not Christ’s disciple, did you not hear his teaching from his very lips and see the example of his life? And remember — when he was in anguish and sorrowful in soul, and three times asked you not to sleep but to pray, and you slept, because your eyes were heavy, and three times he found you sleeping. So it was with me.

“And remember too how you promised him to his face never to deny him, even to death, and how you denied him three times when they led him to Caiaphas. So it was with me.

“And remember too how the cock crowed, and you went out and wept bitterly. So it was with me. You cannot refuse to let me in.”

And the voice behind the doors of paradise fell silent.

And when he had stood there a little while, the sinner again began to knock and to ask to be let into the kingdom of heaven.

And another voice was heard from behind the doors, and it said: “Who is this man, and how did he live in the world?”

And the voice of the accuser answered, and again repeated all the sinner’s bad deeds, and named no good deeds at all.

And the voice from behind the door answered: “Go away from here; such sinners cannot live together with us in paradise.”

And the sinner said: “Lord! I hear your voice, but I do not see your face, and I do not know your name.”

And the voice said to him: “I am the king and prophet David.” And the sinner did not despair, did not go away from the door of paradise, and began to speak: “Have pity on me, King David, and remember human weakness and the mercy of God. God loved you and exalted you before men. You had everything: a kingdom, and glory, and riches, and wives, and children; yet you saw from the roof the wife of a poor man, and sin entered into you, and you took the wife of Uriah and killed the man himself with the sword of the Ammonites. You, the rich man, took from the poor man his last ewe lamb and destroyed the man himself. I too did the same. And remember how afterward you repented and said: I acknowledge my guilt and grieve over my sin. So it was with me. You cannot refuse to let me in.”

And the voice behind the doors fell silent.

And when he had stood there a little while, the sinner again began to knock and to ask to be let into the kingdom of heaven. And a third voice was heard from behind the doors, and it said: “Who is this man? And how did he live his life in the world?”

And the voice of the accuser answered and for the third time listed the man’s bad deeds and named no good ones.

And the voice from behind the door answered: “Go away from here. Sinners cannot enter the kingdom of heaven.”

And the sinner answered: “I hear your voice, but I do not see your face, and I do not know your name.”

And the voice answered: “I am John the Divine, the beloved disciple of Christ.”

And the sinner rejoiced and said: “Now you cannot refuse to let me in: Peter and David will let me in because they know human weakness and the mercy of God. And you will let me in because there is much love in you. Was it not you, John the Divine, who wrote in your book that God is love, and that whoever does not love does not know God? Was it not you who in your old age spoke one word only to people: ‘Brothers, love one another!’ How then can you hate me now and drive me away? Either renounce what you yourself said, or love me and let me into the kingdom of heaven.”

And the gates of paradise opened, and John embraced the repentant sinner and let him into the kingdom of heaven.

Leo Tolstoy

Tolstoy’s own legend (1886), reprinted whole; five words differ from his text of 1886.

Translation notes

  1. Luke 23:42–43: the words of one of the two criminals crucified with Jesus, the thief on the cross of the legend (Tolstoy’s «разбойник», literally “robber”). The KJV reads: “Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.” The Jubilee edition prints no comma after «тебе» (“to you”), where the Russian Bible has one. ↑
  2. «Обличитель», “the accuser”, is one who exposes and denounces another’s wrongs. The legend does not say who he is. ↑
  3. 2 Samuel 11–12. David saw Bathsheba from the roof of his house, took her, and had her husband Uriah killed in the war with the Ammonites; the ewe lamb comes from the parable the prophet Nathan told him (12:1–4), of a rich man who took a poor man’s one lamb. David’s words recall Psalms 51:3 and 38:18 (KJV: “I acknowledge my transgressions”; “I will be sorry for my sin”). ↑
  4. «Иоанн Богослов», literally “John the Theologian”, is the Orthodox name for the apostle John; English has long called him John the Divine, as in the King James Bible’s title “The Revelation of St. John the Divine.” ↑
  5. 1 John 4:8 (KJV: “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love”). The saying of John’s old age comes from a tradition told by Jerome, in his commentary on Galatians 6:10, where the aged John’s words are “Little children, love one another.” ↑

Luke 23:42-43 in the Synodal translation, word for word: the penitent thief's request and Jesus' answer, the epigraph the legend has carried since 1886. Two marks differ. The Synodal and the 1886 text both have a comma after «тебе» ("I say unto thee, to day"); the Circle as printed in vol. 41 has none, so that «ныне» can be read with either clause. The Circle ends verse 42 with the Synodal's exclamation mark, where the 1886 text has a full stop and a dash. «Господи», «Царствие Твое» and «Мною», capitalized in the Synodal, are lower-case in vol. 41. Like the Synodal, the epigraph leaves the speaker unnamed (the thief of verses 40-41); the vol. 25 commentary records that Tolstoy's first draft began «И сказал Иисусу разбойник».
