A Russian proverb, which Dal prints in two forms, one after the other: «Отъ людей утаишь, а отъ Бога не утаишь» (from people you may hide it, from God you will not) and «Передъ попомъ утаишь, а передъ Богомъ не утаишь» (before the priest you may hide it, before God you will not). Tolstoy's «Перед людьми утаишь, а перед богом не утаишь» puts the people of the first into the form of the second; it may be a spoken variant he knew. The Jubilee list of the Circle's sources names «Русские пословицы» without a fuller title. The OCR of the saved printing reads «оть» and «передь» for «отъ» and «передъ».

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. В. И. Даль, Пословицы русского народа, 3rd ed. (St Petersburg and Moscow, M. O. Wolff, 1904), the volume bound as vols. 7-8, section «Причуда», pp. 119-120.
Dal gives the proverb as «Себя уморишь, а на людей не угодишь (а людей не удивишь)» (you will wear yourself to death and not please people, or: and not impress people), and on the next page «Людей не удивишь, хоть себя и уморишь» (you will not impress people, though you wear yourself to death); the OCR reads «Тюдей» and «умбришь». Tolstoy wrote the second form into his manuscript of Thoughts of Wise Men (1903, 30 August: «Людей не удивишь, а себя уморишь»). The Circle has «Себя уморишь, а людей не увидишь», which is Dal's first proverb with its variant ending, except «увидишь» (see) for «удивишь» (impress); the two words differ by two transposed letters, and «людей не увидишь» (you will not see people) makes little sense here, so it is probably a misreading or misprint. Read as «удивишь», the Circle's line is Dal's word for word.
Translation note. The Jubilee volume prints «не увидишь», “you will not see”; the edition’s own errata, at the end of vol. 42, correct it to «не удивишь», “you will not astonish,” as Dal’s collection of proverbs has it.
