  1. 4. Надобно бы было включить вечную праздность в муки ада, а ее-то, напротив, поместили среди радостей рая.

    Монтескье.

    4. Eternal idleness ought to have been counted among the torments of hell, but instead it has been placed among the joys of paradise.

    Montesquieu.

On auroit dû mettre l'oisiveté continuelle parmi les peines de l'enfer ; il me semble au contraire qu'on l'a mise parmi les joies du paradis.

Следовало бы непрерывную праздность поместить среди мучений ада, а ее поместили в число блаженств рая.

Close; Montesquieu's 'il me semble' (it seems to me) is dropped. In 1907 Tolstoy chose the same thought for the Montesquieu he added to Rusanov's book, in a second translation («непрерывную праздность … среди мучений ада»). In his preface to that book (1907) Tolstoy says he found Montesquieu's selected thoughts in the same small volume that held La Rochefoucauld and Vauvenargues; the volume is not named. The Jubilee list of the Circle's sources names 'Les moralistes', ed. Alfred Bougard (Brussels, 1858), not seen.

Translation note. The Russian italic is broken only at the commas around «напротив», “on the contrary”; it is set here as one span.

  2. 5. Я люблю мужиков: они недостаточно учены, чтобы рассуждать превратно.

    Монтескье.

    5. I love peasants: they are not learned enough to reason perversely.

    Montesquieu.

Word for word; 'les paysans' are «мужики», Russia's peasants. The Circle's printed editions signed it «Монтэнь» (Montaigne); the Jubilee editors corrected the signature to «Монтескье», and the thought stands a few lines before that of 4-28.4 in Montesquieu's Pensées diverses. The Circle's Russian is the same, word for word, as no. 11 of the Montesquieu Tolstoy added to Rusanov's book in 1907. No public-domain English was saved.

  3. 1. Надо много учиться, чтобы сознать, что знаешь мало.

    Монтэнь.

    1. One must study a great deal to become aware that one knows little.

    Montaigne [Montesquieu].

From Pensées diverses · reworded by Tolstoy .
    What changed

Montesquieu’s “pour savoir peu,” to know a little, becomes “to become aware that one knows little”: a remark on how little long study yields becomes the realization of one’s own ignorance.

Montesquieu's line, its sense turned. 'Il faut avoir beaucoup étudié pour savoir peu' (one must have studied much to know a little) becomes «чтобы сознать, что знаешь мало» (to realize that one knows little): Montesquieu's remark on how little long study yields becomes the realization of one's own ignorance. The signature is a slip of the name. The line stands in Montesquieu's Pensées diverses directly before 'J'aime les paysans', which the Circle's printed editions also signed «Монтэнь» (27 May, 5-27.5) and the Jubilee editors corrected to «Монтескье»; here they left the signature. Tolstoy himself wrote «Монтень» for Montesquieu in a note of 1907 (vol. 40 commentary: «Монтень [описка; нужно — Монтескье]»), and in На каждый день (19 April, no. 9) he printed the Circle's wording under «Монтескье» (tolstoy). For the Montesquieu he added to Rusanov's La Bruyère in 1907 he translated the same line closer to the French: «Надо много учиться, чтобы знать хоть немного» (to know at least a little; vol. 40, «Избранные мысли Монтескье», no. 10). Cotton's English Montaigne was searched for the thought without result. No public-domain English of Montesquieu's line was found.
