3. It is astonishing to what degree the most trifling disagreement can turn into a holy war. When England and France declared war on Russia in 1855, it came about over so trifling a circumstance that one has to dig long in the diplomatic archives to understand the cause. And yet the consequences of this strange misunderstanding were the death of 500,000 good people and the expenditure of 5 to 6 billion.
In essence there were causes, but of the kind no one admits to. Napoleon III wanted, by means of an alliance with England and a successful war, to secure his power, criminal in its origin; the Russians wanted to seize Constantinople; the English wanted to secure the might of their trade and to check the influence of the Russians in the East. Under one guise or another it is always the same spirit of conquest and violence.

La mort de cinq cent mille braves gens, la dépense de cinq à six milliards, voilà les conséquences de cet obscur conflit.
Les Anglais voulaient assurer le triomphe de leur commerce et empêcher la suprématie de la Russie en Orient. Sous une forme ou sous une autre, c'est toujours l'esprit de conquête ou de violence.

Two paragraphs of Richet's first chapter, kept close and shortened, through Tolstoy's epigraph in «Одумайтесь!» (1904), itself from Grave's anthology. The Circle drops 'grâce à la diplomatie et aux journaux' (thanks to diplomacy and the newspapers), which «Одумайтесь!» kept, and Richet's sentence on the 'longues et patientes fouilles dans les vieux cartons'; 'Mais combien peu avouables!' (but how little avowable) becomes «но такие, в которых не признаются». Richet dates the declaration of war 1856 and «Одумайтесь!» follows him; the Circle prints 1855. Britain and France declared war on Russia in March 1854. The saved scan reads 'TAngleterre' for «l'Angleterre». No English translation found.

3. A time will come when the nations will understand the madness of war.
Four centuries ago the inhabitants of Pisa and Lucca were divided by so cruel a hatred that it seemed eternal, and that the meanest porter of Pisa would have thought it shameful treason to accept anything at all from the foremost citizen of Lucca. What is left of that hatred now? What will be left of the senseless hatred of the Prussian for the Frenchman? One can safely be sure that these feelings will seem to our descendants like the hatred of the Athenians for the Spartans, or of the people of Pisa for the people of Lucca. People will understand that they have more needful things to do than to attack one another; that their common enemies are poverty, ignorance, disease; and that their efforts must be directed against these terrible calamities, and not against their companions in misfortune.

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Dans cent ans (1892), as reprinted in Grave, Guerre-Militarisme (Paris, 1902), p. 95, signed «Charles Richet» (Dans cent ans, Paris: Ollendorff); in the Italian translation, Fra cent'anni (Milan: Treves, 1895), about p. 56.
A paragraph of Richet's Dans cent ans (1892) as Grave reprints it, translated closely. The French book was not found online; its Italian translation of 1895 has the same paragraph, which confirms Grave's attribution. Tolstoy's changes are small: 'l’absurdité de la guerre' (the absurdity of war) is «безумие войны» (the madness of war); 'le plus infime porte-faix' (the lowliest porter) «самый ничтожный носильщик»; 'Soyons bien certains' (let us be quite sure) «Можно быть смело уверенным»; 'nos arrières-petits-neveux' (our great-grand-nephews) «нашим потомкам» (our descendants); 'aussi grotesques que' (as grotesque as) is softened to «покажутся … как» (will seem like); 'Les hommes se diront' (men will tell themselves) is «Люди поймут» (people will understand). Richet returns to Pisa and Lucca in Les Guerres et la paix (1899), the source of June's Richet (6-17.3), in other words. No English translation was found.
