    3. It is astonishing to what degree the most trifling disagreement can turn into a holy war. When England and France declared war on Russia in 1855, it came about over so trifling a circumstance that one has to dig long in the diplomatic archives to understand the cause. And yet the consequences of this strange misunderstanding were the death of 500,000 good people and the expenditure of 5 to 6 billion.

In essence there were causes, but of the kind no one admits to. Napoleon III wanted, by means of an alliance with England and a successful war, to secure his power, criminal in its origin; the Russians wanted to seize Constantinople; the English wanted to secure the might of their trade and to check the influence of the Russians in the East. Under one guise or another it is always the same spirit of conquest and violence.

    3. A time will come when the nations will understand the madness of war.

Four centuries ago the inhabitants of Pisa and Lucca were divided by so cruel a hatred that it seemed eternal, and that the meanest porter of Pisa would have thought it shameful treason to accept anything at all from the foremost citizen of Lucca. What is left of that hatred now? What will be left of the senseless hatred of the Prussian for the Frenchman? One can safely be sure that these feelings will seem to our descendants like the hatred of the Athenians for the Spartans, or of the people of Pisa for the people of Lucca. People will understand that they have more needful things to do than to attack one another; that their common enemies are poverty, ignorance, disease; and that their efforts must be directed against these terrible calamities, and not against their companions in misfortune.
