The younger we are and the less given to thought, the more we believe that the essence of our life lies in the body. The older and more rational we are, the more and more we come to know that the foundation of life, both our own and that of the whole world, lies in the spiritual.

    1. It is good to call to mind as often as we can that our true life is not that outward, bodily life alone which we live here on earth, but that together with this life there is in us another life as well, an inner one — the spiritual.

Our visible, bodily life is the same as scaffolding for putting up a building. Scaffolding in itself is needed only as long as the building is going up. But when the building is finished, the scaffolding is no longer needed, and it is taken down. So it is with our bodily life. It is needed only for putting up the building of the spiritual life, and when this building has been put up, the body is destroyed.

When we see huge, tall scaffolding fastened with iron, while the building itself barely rises above the foundation, it seems to us that everything lies in the scaffolding, and not in the building. It seems the same to us when we see our whole life in our body.

It is good to remind ourselves and one another that just as the scaffolding is there only so that the building can be put up, so our body is there only so that the spiritual life may grow.

Let one behold heaven and earth, and think, ' These are impermanent' — and so the mountains and rivers, the varied forms of life and the productions of nature, all passing away! Attaining to this condition of mind, in a moment there will be illumination.

    2. Look at the sky and at the earth, and consider: all this is passing — all these mountains, and rivers, and the various forms of life, and the works of nature. All this passes away. As soon as you clearly understand this, enlightenment will come at once, and you will know that which is and does not pass away.

    Buddhist saying.

    3. We marvel at the size of buildings, of mountains, of heavenly bodies, we reckon up the millions of cubic feet and of poods in them; and all these things that seem so great are nothing in comparison with that which knows about all this. The mightiest thing in the world is what cannot be seen, cannot be heard, and cannot be touched.

    4. Remember that it is not you who are mortal, but your body; that it is not your body that lives, but the spirit in the body. It is not your body that makes your spirit understand your life and the life of the world; it is the spirit living in you that moves, feels, remembers, foresees, and rules and guides your body and your actions. And as an invisible force rules your body, so there must also be that invisible force which rules the whole world.

    After Cicero.

Only when we have freed ourselves from the deception of the senses, which take the bodily world for what truly exists and matters, can we understand our true calling and fulfill it.
