All the people of the world have equal rights to the use of the natural goods of the world, and equal rights to respect.

    1. We are amazed at how Christianity has been perverted, at how little it has been realized in life, or even not at all; and yet it could hardly have been otherwise with a teaching that by its demand set up the true equality of people: all are sons of God, all are brothers, the life of all is equally sacred. True equality demands the abolition not only of castes, ranks, and privileges, but of the chief instrument of inequality — violence. Equality cannot be realized, as people think, by civil measures; it is realized only by love of God and of people. And love of God and of people is instilled not by civil measures, but by true religious teaching.

That people could fall into the gross error of thinking that liberty, fraternity, and equality can be brought in by executions, threats of execution, and violence does not show that what people were striving for was wrong, but only that the path by which misguided people tried to realize liberty, fraternity, and equality was wrong.

    2. They say equality is impossible because some people will always be stronger and more intelligent than others. It is for this very reason, because some people are stronger and more intelligent than others, says Lichtenberg, that equal rights for people are especially needed. The oppression of the weak by the strong is so terrible now just because, besides the inequality of mind and strength, there is also the inequality of rights.

    3. We need only look at the life of the Christian nations, divided into people who spend their whole lives in stupefying, killing labor that they do not need, and others glutted with idleness and every kind of pleasure, to be struck by the terrible degree of inequality that people professing the law of Christianity have come to, and above all by the lie of preaching equality in an order of life that appalls with the most cruel and obvious inequality.

    4. No one realizes true equality in life as children do. And how criminal adults are when they violate this sacred feeling in them, teaching them that there are emperors, kings, the rich, and celebrities, who must be treated with respect, and there are servants, workers, and beggars, who may be treated with contempt! “And whoever tempts one of these little ones…”

Christ revealed to people what they had always known: that all people are equal to one another, equal because one and the same spirit lives in all of them. But since ancient times people have so divided themselves into tsars, nobles, the rich, workers, and beggars that, though they know they are all equal, they live as though they did not know it, and say that in reality there can be no equality among people. Do not believe this. Learn from little children. Do as they do: meet all people with love and kindness, and all alike. If you use the familiar form of address with some people, use it with all; if the formal, use the formal with all. If people exalt themselves, do not respect them more than others. But if people are humiliated, take special care to respect these humiliated ones, so as not to give way to a bad example.
