No reasoning can reduce the spiritual to the material or explain how the spiritual arises from the material.

Whatever this is that I am, it is a little flesh and breath, and the ruling part.
The third, then, is the ruling part; consider thus: Thou art an old man; no longer let this be a slave, no longer be pulled by the strings like a puppet to unsocial movements, no longer be either dissatisfied with thy present lot, or shrink from the future.

    1. Man regards both his body and his soul as himself. But man always, especially in youth, cares only for the body. And yet the chief thing in every man is not the body but the soul. And so one must care most of all not for the body but for the soul. Accustom yourself to this, remember more often that your life is in the spirit, guard it from all the filth of everyday life, do not let the flesh stifle it, subject the body to the spirit, and then you will fulfill your calling and live your life joyfully.

    After Marcus Aurelius.

    2. The whole matter lies in this: to believe or not to believe in the reality of the spirit. In the spiritual sense, people are divided into the living and the dead, that is, into believers and unbelievers.

The unbeliever says: “Spirit, indeed… But what I have eaten and enjoyed, that is mine!” And without much thought he cares only for what is outward, doing his carnal and evil deeds; he lies, gives himself airs, is servile, and does not feel in himself the higher needs: for freedom, truth, love. Such a man hides from the light of reason, because he is dead, and because light gives life only to what is living, and withers and rots what is dead.

Faith in the reality of the spiritual life gives a man’s thoughts another direction.

The believer in the spiritual life turns his attention inward, tries to sort out his feelings, his thoughts, tries to direct his life according to the higher demands: to make it free, truthful, loving; he tries by his deeds to build his life out of such thoughts and feelings as best answer to the aims of the good. Such a man seeks the truth and reaches toward the light, because the life of the spirit is impossible without the light of reason, as the life of the visible world is impossible without the light of the sun.

Among people there are neither those who dwell wholly in darkness nor those who dwell wholly in light; all are at the crossroads, and each, having in himself the power to go, goes this way or that. And everyone who believes in the reality of the spirit and lives under the light of reason abides in the kingdom of God and has eternal life.

    3. Let the learned and the philosophers invent their predeterminations, their necessary motions; let them think that the world came about through a series of accidents. I see in the world that unity of design which, in spite of their assertions, compels me to acknowledge a single principle. It is just as if they told me that the Iliad had been composed out of printer’s type thrown down at random. I would say to them without hesitation: that is not true, although I have no other reason for not believing it except that I cannot believe it.

“All this is superstition,” say the learned. Superstition, perhaps — I answer — but what can your reasoning, so far from clear, do against a superstition that convinces more than it does?

You say: “There are not two principles, the spiritual and the bodily.” I say that there is nothing in common between my thought and a tree.

And what is most amusing of all is that they demolish one another with their own sophisms, and would sooner grant a soul to stones than acknowledge one in man.

I do not know whether a dog can choose, remember, love, fear, imagine, think; so when I am told that in a dog all this is not passions, not feelings, but the natural and necessary working of the structure of its organism, which is made up of various combinations of particles of matter, I can agree with that opinion. But I think, and I know that I think. What, then, can there be in common between that which thinks and this or that combination of particles of matter, that is, of space, divisible in all its directions and dimensions — in length, breadth, and depth?

If everything is only matter, and if thought in me, as in all people, is only the result of combinations of particles of matter, then who engendered in the world the thought of any beings other than bodily ones? How can matter be the cause of that which denies it and shuts it out of its own existence? How can it be, in man, that which thinks, that is, the very thing that serves to convince man that he is not matter?

… metaphysics must be considered as really existing, if not as a science, nevertheless as a natural disposition of the human mind (metaphysica naturalis). For human reason, without any instigations imputable to the mere vanity of great knowledge, unceasingly progresses, urged on by its own feeling of need, towards such questions as cannot be answered by any empirical application of reason, or principles derived therefrom; and so there has ever really existed in every man some system of metaphysics.
It will always exist, so soon as reason awakes to the exercise of its power of speculation.

    6. Metaphysics really exists, if not as a science, then as a natural disposition, because human reason, pressing irresistibly forward, driven to it not merely by a vain desire to know much but by its own need as well, arrives at questions that no empirical activity of reason, and no principles derived from it, can answer. Thus in all people whose reason has extended itself to speculation there has really always been some metaphysics; and there always will be.

The difference between the spiritual and the material is equally clear to the simplest mind, a child’s, and to the deepest mind, a sage’s. Reasoning and disputes about the spiritual and the material are useless. Such reasoning will explain nothing; it will only obscure what is clear and beyond dispute.
