As in all things of this world every new means, every new advantage, and every new superiority at once brings its own disadvantages with it, so reason too, while giving man so great an advantage over the animals, brings its own disadvantages with it and opens such paths of temptation as an animal can never enter. Through them motives of a new kind, which cannot reach an animal, gain power over man’s will: namely, abstract motives — mere thoughts, which are by no means always drawn from one’s own experience, but are often born of the words and examples of others, of suggestion, and of literature. With the possibility of understanding there at once opens to man the possibility of error. And every error, sooner or later, will do harm, and the greater the error, the greater the harm. For a personal error one will have to pay some day, and not infrequently at a high price; it is the same, on a large scale, with the errors of whole peoples. And so it cannot be said too often that every error, wherever it is met with, must be pursued and rooted out as an enemy of humanity, and that there can be no harmless errors, still less useful ones. The thinking man must take up the struggle against them; he must, even if humanity were to scream aloud at it, like a patient whose abscess the doctor is lancing.
For the masses, the place of true education is taken by a kind of drilling. It is carried out by example, by habit, and by hammering certain notions in firmly from earliest childhood, before the intellect has gathered enough experience, and judgment enough strength, to fight against it. That is just how thoughts come to be implanted which afterward sit as firmly, and remain as unconquerable by any instruction whatever, as if they were innate; and indeed even philosophers often take them for such. In this way one can implant in people, with equal success, what is just, and what is reasonable, and what is most absurd — accustom them, for example, to approach this or that idol only when filled with holy awe, and at the utterance of its name to cast themselves into the dust, not with the body only but with their whole soul; to lay down their lives and goods willingly for words, for names, in defense of the most fantastic trifles; to count this or that, arbitrarily, as the greatest honor or the greatest disgrace, and accordingly to respect or despise a man from the depths of their souls; to abstain from all meat, as in Hindustan, or to eat still warm and quivering pieces cut from a living animal, as in Abyssinia; to devour people, as in New Zealand, or to give up their children as sacrifices to Moloch; to castrate themselves, to throw themselves willingly onto the pyre on which a dead man is being burned — in a word, one can accustom them to anything at all. Hence the Crusades, the debaucheries of fanatical sects; hence the Chiliasts and the Khlysty, the persecutions of heretics, the autos-da-fé (the fires of the Inquisition), and all that can be found in the long scroll of human errors…
The tragedy of errors and prejudices lies in their practical side, the comedy in their theoretical side: there is no absurdity that, if it has first been instilled in only three people, could not become the conviction of a whole nation.
Such are the disadvantages bound up with the presence of reason in us.

People’s errors and disagreements in seeking and acknowledging the truth come from nothing other than their distrust of reason; as a result, human life, guided by customs, traditions, fashions, superstitions, prejudices, violence, and anything you please except reason, flows on by itself, and reason exists by itself. It often happens, too, that if the organ of reason — thinking — is applied to anything at all, it is applied not to seeking and spreading the truth, but to justifying and upholding, at whatever cost, customs, traditions, fashions, superstitions, prejudices.
People’s errors and disagreements in acknowledging the one truth arise not because reason in people is not one, or cannot show them the one truth, but because they do not believe in it.
If they believed in their reason, they would find a way to check the testimony of reason in themselves against its testimony in others.
And having found this means of mutual checking, they would be convinced that reason is one, even though, owing to the different degrees of strength of the organ of reason — thinking — it shows different things.
It is the same with reason as with sight. As the organs of sight — the eyes — open to people physical horizons of different radii, not because the laws of sight lack unity, but because of differences in degrees of farsightedness or in points of view (in the literal sense), so the organ of reason — thinking — opens to people different mental and moral horizons, not because the laws of thinking lack unity, but owing to differences either in degrees of mental farsightedness or in points of view (in the figurative sense).
And as, in surveying the physical horizon, the one-sidedness of separate, particular points of view is corrected by uniting them in one common point of view, the highest, for example (in the literal sense of the word), and differences in degrees of farsightedness are evened out by optical instruments: spectacles, binoculars, telescopes — so, in studying the moral and spiritual horizons, the same one-sidedness of single points of view is corrected by a like uniting of them in one common, higher point of view; while differences in degrees of mental farsightedness are balanced out with the help of enlightenment, and the best organ of such equalizing is the word that comes from the lips of the wisest people.
The sage assists at the independent birth in people of their own ideas and feelings, which were placed in them from eternity. His role is entirely like that of a spyglass, which does not give sight to a blind man, but only strengthens the sight of even the poorest eyes. Socrates likened the sage to a midwife, who does not give a woman a child, but only helps her bring her own into the world.
But the cause of people’s disagreement in acknowledging the one truth lies not only in differences of points of view and of degrees of understanding. The cause of such disagreement lies hidden also in people’s self-regard, owing to which a man who has already inwardly granted the reasonableness of his interlocutor’s arguments very often still goes on defending the opinion he has once expressed.
