… almost all of us have done in this age of science and intellectual freedom, have no means left of knowing why they are in the world and what they are come there to do.
Physical evil, moral evil, the miseries of the soul and the senses, the prosperity of the wicked, the humiliation of the just man, all this would still be endurable, if we could grasp the system and economy of it all, if we could divine a providence directing the chaos.

    8. The strength and grace of religion lie in its explaining to man the meaning of his existence and his ultimate calling. But when (as we have all done in our age of science and intellectual freedom) we have cast off all the foundations of the morality that flows from religion, there is no longer any means of knowing why we have come into this world and what we are to do in it.

The mystery of fate enfolds us on every side with its mighty questions, and indeed one must not think at all if one is not to feel the tormenting, terrifying senselessness of life. Bodily sufferings, moral evil, the pains of the soul, the happiness of the wicked, the humiliation of the righteous — all this could be borne if one could understand the inner order of the world’s design, if one could suppose a Providence in it. The believer rejoices in his wounds; he patiently bears the injustices and violence of his enemies; sin, even crimes, do not deprive him of hope. But for a man in whom all faith has been extinguished, evil and suffering lose their meaning, and life appears only as a loathsome joke.

Дважды добавлено «во имя чести», так что преступления и унижения народов стали делом чести; вместо «This last pretext is perhaps the most extravagant of all» — «Оправдание войн честью самое странное», а «rape» из перечня преступлений выпало.

The unreasonableness of modern wars disguises itself under dynastic interest, nationality, balance of power, honour.
This last pretext is perhaps the most extravagant of all, for there is not a nation in the world that is not sullied with every crime and loaded with every shame.
There is not one of them which has not endured all the humiliations that fortune could inflict on a miserable band of men.
If there yet remains any honour among the nations, it is a strange means of upholding it to make war—that is to say, to commit all the crimes by which an individual dishonours himself: arson, robbery, rape, murder.

    1. The madness of modern wars is justified by dynastic interest, by nationality, by the European balance of power, by honor. The justification of wars by honor is the strangest of all, because there is not a single nation that has not defiled itself, in the name of honor, with every crime and shameful deed. There is not one that has not, in the name of honor, undergone every kind of humiliation. And if there is such a thing as honor among nations, what a strange way to uphold it by war, that is, by all the crimes by which a private man dishonors himself: arson, robbery, murder.
