The consciousness of God is simple and within reach of everyone. Knowledge of him is beyond the reach of any human being.

    1. A reasonable and modest man, with a developed but limited mind, feels his limits and does not go beyond them, and within these limits he finds the idea of his soul and of his Creator, conscious of the impossibility of bringing these ideas to full clarity and of contemplating them as only a pure spirit could contemplate them. He stops before them in submission and does not touch the veil, content with the consciousness that he stands before a lofty being. Only up to this limit is philosophy useful and needed. Beyond it lie idle abstractions, not proper to man, from which the reasonable man abstains and which are foreign to the man of the crowd.

All the peoples of the world know and honor God; though each clothes him in its own way, beneath all these garments it is still the same God.

A chosen minority, with higher demands of learning, not satisfied with what plain common sense provides, seeks a more abstract God. I do not condemn these people. But this minority is wrong if, putting itself in the place of all humanity, it asserts that God is hidden from people because it does not see him. I admit that it may happen that people’s cunning tricks convince the majority for a time that there is no God, but this fashion cannot last. And one way or another, man will always need God. If, contrary to the law of nature, the Deity revealed himself to us still more plainly, I am sure that men opposed to God would invent new subtleties to deny him. Reason always submits to what the heart demands.

    2. The most certain thing in all the world for me is my consciousness of myself in the present.

«Der Glaube an einen Gott ist Instinct»,

    3. Faith in God is as proper to the nature of man as his ability to walk on two legs; in some people this faith may change its form and even die out altogether, but as a general rule it exists and is necessary for a rational life.
