    2. When one studies the various activities of men not superficially but thoroughly, one cannot refrain from the following sad reflection: how many lives are spent in prolonging the reign of evil on earth, and how this evil is furthered most of all by the institution of standing armies.

The astonishment and sorrow grow still greater at the thought that all this is needless, that this evil, accepted so complacently by the vast majority of men, comes only from their foolishness, only from their allowing a relatively small number of people, skillful and corrupt, to exploit them.

    Patrice Larroque.

Close; Tolstoy drops 'instead of working to make the good reign' and turns 'careers' into 'activities'. Taken over unchanged from his own epigraph in «Одумайтесь!».
