  1. 4. Иногда один властитель нападает на другого из страха, чтобы тот не напал на него. Иногда начинают войну потому, что неприятель слишком силен, а иногда потому, что он слишком слаб, иногда наши соседи желают того, чем мы владеем, или владеют тем, чего нам недостает. Тогда начинается война и продолжается до тех пор, покуда они захватят то, что им нужно, или отдадут то, что нужно нам.

    Джонатан Свифт.

    4. Sometimes one ruler attacks another for fear that the other will attack him. Sometimes war is begun because the enemy is too strong, and sometimes because he is too weak; sometimes our neighbors want what we possess, or possess what we lack. Then war begins and goes on until they seize what they need or give up what we need.

    Jonathan Swift.

Parfois un prince en moleste un autre, dans la crainte que ce soit cet autre qui lui cherche noise.
Parfois nos voisins désirent ce que nous avons, ou possèdent ce dont nous manquons; alors nous en venons aux mains, jusqu'à ce qu'ils s'emparent de nos biens ou nous abandonnent les leurs.

    Jonathan Swift’s own words
Sometimes one prince quarrels with another for fear the other should quarrel with him.
Sometimes a war is entered upon, because the enemy is too strong; and sometimes, because he is too weak.
Sometimes our neighbours want the things which we have, or have the things which we want, and we both fight, till they take ours, or give us theirs.

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Gulliver's Travels (1726), Part IV, A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms, ch. V, Gulliver's account to his master of the causes of war.

A close translation of three sentences of Swift, through the French. Tolstoy first used them as an epigraph to ch. II of «Одумайтесь!» (1904), among sayings on war taken from Jean Grave's anthology Guerre-Militarisme (1902), where Swift's passage stands after the Anatole France extract that Tolstoy also used there (What Tolstoy read). Grave's French accounts for the two departures from Swift: 'quarrels with another' is 'moleste' (Tolstoy: нападает, 'attacks'), and 'and we both fight' is 'alors nous en venons aux mains' (Tolstoy: 'Then war begins'). The Circle's text differs from the 1904 epigraph in three words: 'властитель' for 'властелин', 'он слишком слаб' for 'слишком слаб', and 'начинается война и продолжается до тех пор' for 'начинается война до тех пор'.
