    Blackie’s own words

Close: 'all debauch' becomes 'every intemperance' (всякая невоздержанность), 'incipient suicide' becomes 'the germ of suicide', and 'washes away the foundations' becomes 'will undermine its foundation'. Word for word as in Thoughts of Wise Men (1903, 13 April), whose commentary (Jubilee vol. 40) says that Blackie's saying there was taken from the «Иллюстрированный настольный календарь т-ва «Просвещение» на 1902 год», a Russian desk calendar, not found; the word 'intemperance' may be the calendar translator's. Blackie's sentence is printed here (the scan's space before the semicolon, a printer's space, is left out).
