  1. 7. Малые страдания выводят нас из самих себя, великие же возвращают нас самим себе. Треснувший колокол издает глухой звук: разбейте его на две части — он снова издает чистый звук.

    Жан-Поль (Рихтер).

    7. Small sufferings drive us out of ourselves; great ones return us to ourselves. A cracked bell gives a dull sound: break it in two — it gives a clear sound again.

Not found in Jean Paul. Tolstoy took the thought from his own Thoughts of Wise Men (1903), 24 February (the tolstoy block), adding «чистый» (clear) to the bell's restored sound; the Jubilee vol. 40 commentary says Richter's sayings in that book came from the «Иллюстрированный настольный календарь т-ва «Просвещение» на 1902 год», a Russian desk calendar, which was not found. The bell appears in Jean Paul's Das Kampaner Tal (related block), turned the other way: those who loved too much and lost too much, “whose wound does not heal until death widens it, as a cracked bell keeps its dull tone until the crack is enlarged.” The first sentence (small sufferings lead us out of ourselves, great ones return us to ourselves) was not found.

Searched: Web searches in German («zersprungene Glocke», «kleine Leiden», «große Leiden», «zwei Stücke») and English (“cracked bell”, “small sorrows”, “break it in two” with Richter), which found only the Kampaner Tal passage; the saved Jubilee vols. 40–45.
