    Details

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Saying attributed to Frederick II, as printed in Jean Grave's anthology Guerre-Militarisme (Paris, 1902); not found in Frederick's own writings, Grave, Guerre-Militarisme, chapter «Discipline», p. 317; then Tolstoy's «Одумайтесь!» (1904), among the epigraphs.

Word for word from the French as Grave prints it ('if my soldiers began to think, not one would stay in the ranks'), with no source given; Tolstoy used it first in «Одумайтесь!». The saying is widely quoted as Frederick's but has not been found in his works or letters; treat the attribution as traditional, not verified. Grave prints it just before the end of Lamennais's chapter on the soldiers who 'do not think, they obey' (see 12-20.4).
