Comte's maxim 'Vivre au grand jour', the rule of private life he sets as the basis of public life; Tolstoy's «Живи открыто» translates it exactly. The scan reads 'Fivre au grand jour' where the maxim is printed alone, so the excerpts show the sentence that introduces it and the later phrase 'la loi de vivre au grand jour'. In his 1906 revision of Thoughts of Wise Men Tolstoy put «Живи открыто» at the head of Ruskin's sentences on secrecy for October 30, still signed Ruskin; the Circle gives the two words alone, signed Comte.
