The existing order of Christian societies is contrary to the Christian law in its true meaning.
1. Almost all the efforts of the human mind are directed not toward easing the labor of those who labor, but only toward easing and adorning the idleness of the idle.
2. The people of our time have arranged for themselves a life contrary both to the moral and to the physical nature of human beings, and they strain all the powers of their minds to persuade people that this is the truest life of all. Everything that is called culture in our time — our sciences, arts, improvements — all these are only attempts to cheat the moral demands of human beings.

3. If anyone were to look at our world, how much folly he would see, how many tears he would shed, what laughter he would laugh, how much hatred he would feel! We do indeed act so that our deeds are ridiculous, and foolish, and pitiful, and hateful. Here is one who feeds dogs to hunt wild beasts, and himself grows bestial; another feeds oxen and asses to haul stones, yet despises people dying of hunger; he spends a vast amount of gold to erect men of stone, yet leaves in neglect the real ones, who have turned to stone from their miseries. Another collects precious gems and with great labor adorns his walls with them, yet on seeing the naked limbs of beggars is not moved in the least. Some devise yet more garments to add to their garments, while others have nothing with which to cover even their naked bodies.
One squanders everything on harlots and parasites, another on players and dancers, another on splendid buildings, on buying villages and houses. One reckons interest, another interest on interest, another draws up papers filled with many murders, and even at night has no rest, keeping sleepless watch to the ruin of others. Scarcely has the day broken when one runs off to unrighteous gain, another to dissolute spending, and others to theft from the state. In general there is much care for what is superfluous and criminal, and not even a thought for what is necessary.

4. Just as it is contrary to the law of nature for a child to rule over adults, or a madman over a wise man, so too it is contrary to the law of nature for a handful of people to be glutted with superfluities while the hungry crowd lacks what is necessary.

Что измененоКонцовка перевернута: людоедство, «the most merciful form in which man has ever lived upon his fellow-man», стало «не более жестокой формой существования на чужой счет»; вместо «actually ate their flesh» — «попросту поедали их тела».

5. In the ages of cannibalism the strong devoured the weak, simply ate their bodies. But despite all the laws people have established, despite the successes of the sciences, strong, heartless people still go on living at the expense of the weak, the unfortunate, and the foolish. True, they do not eat their flesh or drink their blood, but they live all the same on their privation and want. The poor, who cripple themselves with work and spend their whole lives in nothing but the care of feeding themselves and their families, are in essence eaten by their fellow men. Seeing the disintegration of the civilized world, its unrest and tears, its broken hopes and wretched reality, its famines and crimes, its humiliation and shame, one comes, in spite of oneself, to the conclusion that cannibalism was no crueler a form of existence at the expense of others.
There is, there was, and there always will be only one task for us worth giving our whole life to. That task is loving communion with people and the breaking down of the barriers that people have raised between themselves.
