Neither the name nor the saying was traced. The Jubilee name index lists «Жонизад Рафезский — т. 41: 240» with no dates or description, so its editors did not identify him either. No French, German, or English form of the saying ('people are often proud of a clean conscience only because they have a short memory') was found, and no writer whose name «Жонизад Рафезский» could transcribe was found. The thought is not in Tolstoy's Thoughts of Wise Men (1903).

Searched: Jubilee vols. 40 and 42 (name index and commentary); web searches for «Жонизад Рафезский», for the French 'mémoire courte' with 'conscience', and the English 'clear conscience' with 'short memory' or 'bad memory'; Southgate's two anthologies for 'short memory'.

Translation note. The name is given as Tolstoy wrote it, «Жонизад Рафезский»; whom it names is uncertain.
