The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Briefe an eine Freundin (1847), letter from Burgörner, 6 September 1825, Briefe an eine Freundin, ed. Huhnhäuser (Berlin, 1921), letter of 6 September 1825; Couper (1849), vol. I, Letter XLIX, p. 195.

A clause from Wilhelm von Humboldt's letter to Charlotte Diede, closely: “and certainly it is almost more important how a man takes his fate than what his fate is.” Tolstoy drops “almost” (fast noch wichtiger), so «Несомненно важнее» (undoubtedly more important) makes Humboldt's qualified claim unqualified. Humboldt goes on to the proverb that each man makes his own fate. The Jubilee name index identifies «Гумбольдт» as Friedrich Wilhelm von Humboldt (1767–1835), the philologist and Prussian statesman. Tolstoy reprinted it in «Путь жизни» (the tolstoy block).
