Tolstoy translates the French of Moralistes anciens closely: "Mortels, nous avons peu de temps à vivre; quelques instants nous sont accordés. Mais l'ame n'éprouvera pas la vieillesse, et jouira d'une éternelle vie" (mortals, we have little time to live; a few moments are granted us; but the soul will not know old age, and will enjoy an eternal life). «Смертные, нам не долго жить; нам даровано лишь несколько мгновений» is the first sentence; «душа наша не испытывает старости и будет жить вечно» (our soul does not know old age and will live for ever) renders the second, with the future "n'éprouvera pas" made present and "jouira d'une éternelle vie" (will enjoy an eternal life) «будет жить вечно» (will live for ever). «Фосиклид» is Tolstoy's or his copyist's form of «Фокилид», the French "Phocylide"; the Jubilee index lists it without identification (vol. 42, p. 63). Lévesque's preface takes the Sentences for the work of Phocylides of Miletus, a little later than Theognis; later scholarship, not consulted here, assigns the poem to a much later author, called Pseudo-Phocylides. No public-domain Greek text or English translation of the poem was saved, so neither is quoted.
