The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Suggestive Thoughts on Religious Subjects (Henry Southgate), under "Arrogance".

Found in Southgate's Suggestive Thoughts, under "Arrogance", signed "John Calvin". The scan's OCR is poor and is quoted as it stands; in context the words read "This is the greatest arrogance. Not to allow God has secret reasons, which our reason cannot fathom" ("allow" and "reason" are uncertain readings). Tolstoy turns the statement into a question and answer, «В чем самая великая дерзость? В том, чтобы...», and «таких соображений, которые непонятны нам» (such considerations as are incomprehensible to us) renders "secret reasons, which our reason cannot fathom". Southgate names no work. Calvin's original was not identified: Beveridge's English of the Institutes (Gutenberg 45001 and 64392) was searched for "arrogance", "secret reasons", and "fathom" without result.
