Seume's aphorism, closely: "He who fears death has lost life" (Wer den Tod fürchtet, hat das Leben verloren); Tolstoy writes «Тот не живет, кто страшится смерти» (he does not live who fears death). The Jubilee name index identifies «Зейме» as Johann Gottfried Seume (1763–1810), the German writer. The Apokryphen, his aphorisms, were printed in 1811, the year after his death. How the line reached Tolstoy is not known. No public-domain English translation was found.

Translation note. Johann Gottfried Seume (1763–1810), the German writer.
