    5. There are two kinds of socialism. Both seek the greatest well-being of all.

One strives to attain universal happiness; the other, to make it possible for everyone to be happy in his own way.

One recognizes the authority of the state; the other recognizes no authority.

One demands monopoly for the state; the other wants the abolition of all monopolies.

One wants the governed class to become the ruling class; the other wants the abolition of classes.

One believes in social war; the other believes only in the works of peace.

There are only these two socialisms. One is in the age of childhood; the other, of maturity. One is already the past; the other, the future. One must give way to the other. And each of us must choose between these two socialisms, or else not count himself a socialist at all.

    Ernest Lesigne.

    From «Les deux socialismes», one of Lesigne's «Lettres socialistes» in Le Radical · shortened by Tolstoy .
    In English · Benjamin R. Tucker, 1893
Both are in pursuit of the greatest possible welfare for all.
One aims to establish happiness for all, the other to enable each to be happy in his own way.
One wishes the governed class to become the governing class ; the other wishes the disappearance of classes.
One is the infancy of Socialism; the other is its manhood.

Tucker's English, at the close of his essay «State Socialism and Anarchism» (written 1886, printed in Liberty, 10 March 1888), reprinted in Instead of a Book (New York, 1893), pp. 16–18.

Eight of Lesigne's antitheses and his close, in his order. Left out: the opening pairs (communistic and solidaritarian, dictatorial and libertarian, and the rest), the State as a society 'sui generis', revolution and cataclysm, proletaires, expropriation, equality, and the list of the land, the mine, the tool, and the product. 'The first proclaims the sovereignty of the State, the second recognizes no sort of sovereign' becomes «Один признает власть государства; другой не признает никакой власти» (no power of any kind); 'The first has confidence in social war' is «Один верит в социальную войну». Lesigne wrote in French, in Le Radical; his French was not found online, so the Russian is compared with Tucker's English, which Tolstoy may have read: whether he had the French or the English is not known. Tucker's dates for the lecture and its first printing are from the book.
