    7. I am conscious within me of a power that will in time transform the world. It does not push or press, but I feel it drawing me, little by little and irresistibly. And I see that something attracts me, just as I unconsciously attract others. I carry them along, and they carry me along, and we are conscious of a striving toward a new union.

And I asked the power that was in me: Who are you?

And it answered: I am love, the ruler of heaven, and I want to be the ruler of the earth.

I am the mightiest of all the powers of heaven, and I have come to form the society of the future.

    Crosby.

From Plain Talk in Psalm and Parable · shortened by Tolstoy .
    Crosby’s own words
I feel the force stirring within me which in time will re-form the world. It does not push or obtrude, but I am conscious of it drawing gently and irresistibly at my vitals. And I see that as I am attracted, so I begin unaccountably to attract others. I draw them and they in turn draw me, and we recognise a tendency to group ourselves anew.
Get in touch with the great central magnet, and you will yourself become a magnet; …
And I asked the force within my soul, …
    Who art thou?
And it answered and said, …
I am Love, the Lord of Heaven, and I would be called Love, the Lord of Earth. I am the mightiest of all the heavenly hosts, and I am come to create the State that is to be.

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. Plain Talk in Psalm and Parable (Boston, Small, Maynard, 1899), 'The State', part III, pp. 185-187.

Shortened from Tolstoy's own earlier Russian. In «Одумайтесь!» (1904) he translated the whole of part III as an epigraph; for the Circle he leaves out the middle ('Get in touch with the great central magnet...' to 'human laws shrivel and dry up before us'), and Crosby's last words, 'to create the State that is to be', which were «государство будущего» (the state of the future) in 1904, become «общество будущего» (the society of the future). 'Which in time will re-form the world' becomes 'which in time will transform the world', and 'I would be called Love, the Lord of Earth' becomes 'I wish to be lord of the earth'.

  2. 8. Не только саблю и ружье мы назначаем на ту полку в музее, где лежат орудия пытки; но не можем не знать, что скоро и полицейское устройство и выборный ящик последуют за ними.

    Эрнест Кросби.

    8. It is not only the saber and the rifle that we assign to the museum shelf where the instruments of torture lie; we cannot help knowing that the police system and the ballot box will soon follow them.
