    2. The savage instinct of murder in war has been so carefully cultivated and encouraged over thousands of years that it has put down deep roots in the human brain. It is to be hoped, however, that a society better than ours will manage to free itself from this terrible crime. But what will that better humanity think then of the so-called refined civilization of which we are so proud? Almost the same as we think of the ancient Mexican people and their cannibalism, at once warlike, pious and bestial.

    Letourneau.

The anthology Tolstoy probably took it from

The words shown were found, word for word, in the saved source text. L'Évolution politique dans les diverses races humaines (Paris, 1890), Chapter XIX, «La guerre», closing paragraph (pp. 524–525); quoted at the opening of Grave's Guerre-Militarisme (1902), p. 1.

The last three sentences of Letourneau's chapter on war, in order and translated closely. The two sentences «Но что подумает тогда то лучшее человечество…» and «А почти то же…» follow directly in Letourneau's paragraph, which ends the chapter, and in Grave's excerpt; «Одумайтесь!» prints all four sentences as a single epigraph signed «Летурно». One change of wording: humanity's hope to 'correct itself of this original vice' becomes 'free itself from this terrible crime' («этого ужасного преступления»); 'pious, warlike and bestial' is reordered 'warlike, pious and animal'. Not in Letourneau's La Guerre dans les diverses races humaines (1895), which was searched; no public-domain English found.

Translation note. The digitized Jubilee text prints this entry’s last two sentences, and Letourneau’s signature, inside the day’s opening thought; they are set back here, where “that better humanity” takes up “a society better than ours”.
