Fausböll's verse, faithfully: 'watches over' becomes 'nurtures and guards', and 'cultivate a boundless (friendly) mind' becomes 'nurture and guard in himself a friendly feeling'; 'boundless' is dropped. The Pali has 'as a mother would guard with her life her own son, her only son, so toward all beings let one cultivate a boundless mind'.

1. Be a lamp to yourself. Be a refuge to yourself. Hold to the light of your own lamp, and seek no other refuge.
