If life is a good, then death, which is a necessary condition of life, is a good too.

Текст источника: archive.orgВ английском переводе · R. B. Haldane and J. Kemp, 1886Death is the moment of that deliverance from the one‐sidedness of an individuality which does not constitute the inmost kernel of our being, but is rather to be thought of as a kind of aberration of it.
The peace and quietness upon the countenance of most dead persons seems to have its origin in this.
Quiet and easy is, as a rule, the death of every good man: but to die willingly, to die gladly, to die joyfully, is the prerogative of the resigned, of him who surrenders and denies the will to live. For only he wills to die _really_, and not merely _apparently_, and consequently he needs and desires no continuance of his person.

1. Death is a liberation from the one-sidedness of personality. It is on this, apparently, that the expression of peace and calm on the faces of most of the dead depends. The death of every good man is usually calm and easy; but to die readily, willingly, to die joyfully — this is the privilege of one who has renounced himself, of one who gives up the will to live and denies it. For only such a man wants to die in reality and not in appearance, and consequently neither needs nor demands the further existence of his personality.

Что измененоДве строки хора, отрицающего жизнь после смерти, стали изречением: вопрос к слушателю, «Dost ask where thou shalt lie when death has claimed thee?», стал общим вопросом «Где умершие?», а из ответа, «Where they lie who were never born», ушел глагол «lie»: «Там же, где нерожденные».

2. Where are the dead? In the same place as the unborn.
3. If death is terrible, the cause of this lies not in it, but in us. The better we are, the less we fear death.
For a saint there is no death.
4. Bodily death destroys what unites the body — destroys the consciousness of temporal life. But this happens to us constantly and every day, when we fall asleep. The question is: does bodily death destroy what unites all the successive consciousnesses into one, that is, my particular relation to the world? To assert this, one must first prove that this particular relation to the world, which unites all the successive consciousnesses into one, was born with my bodily existence and will therefore die with it. And this is just what is lacking.
Reasoning on the basis of my consciousness, I see that what united all my consciousnesses into one — a certain receptivity to one thing and coldness to another, owing to which one thing remains in me and another vanishes, the degree of my love of good and hatred of evil — that this particular relation of mine to the world, which constitutes precisely me, the particular me, is not the product of any external cause, but is the fundamental cause of all the other phenomena of my life.
When I reason on the basis of observation, it appears to me that the causes of the particularity of my I lie in the particularities of my parents and of the conditions that influenced me and them; but, reasoning further along this path, I cannot help seeing that if my particular I lies in the particularity of my parents and of the conditions that influenced them, then it lies also in the particularity of all my ancestors and in the conditions of their existence — to infinity, that is, outside time and outside space — so that my particular I arose outside space and outside time, that is, it is the very thing I am conscious of.

6. People who do not understand life cannot help fearing death.
You fear death, but think: what would it be like if you were doomed to eternal life in your personality, ever one and the same?
