There is only one unalterable law — the law of God, common to all people; human law can be law only so long as it does not disagree with the law of God.

    1. Jesus answered them, and said, My teaching is not mine, but his that sent me. If any man will do his will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it be of God, or whether I speak on my own.

The voice of Duty, — what is it, if it be not the suggestion of God ? Is it the mandate of your own fancy, imposed upon yourself, — the mere imperative mood in the soliloquies of your own will ? Not so ; for were the law of your making, you might forgive its violation, and the thought that set it up might take it down ; yet you feel its authority above your reach, and your boast of indifference to be a sad pretence.
Is it a mere echo of men's opinion, — a deference to their arbitrary demands ? Not so ; for how often does it lift you above that opinion, nerve your heart to withstand the injustice of a crowd, …
As well might you persuade me that my own eyes created the daylight or that the sunshine was the gift of public opinion, as that the sense of right was anything but the direct illumination of God, …
Not more certainly does Perception teach us what is external to our senses, than Consciousness what lies beyond our personality ; and that the authority of Justice, Purity, and Truth is no manufacture of my own, but is imposed upon me by a Divine source above me, …

    2. What is the voice of duty, if not the prompting of God?

But perhaps it is a prescription of your own imagination? The imperative mood of your conversation with yourself?

Or perhaps it is only an echo of human opinions, a submission to the demands of public opinion?

But no: if it were a law we had invented ourselves, we could forgive ourselves for breaking it, we could repeal it. But we feel that the power of this law is beyond our control and that we cannot disregard it.

Nor can we admit that it is the influence of public opinion, for this voice has often raised us above public opinion, has given us strength to fight the injustice of the crowd, to fight alone in the name of good and without hope of success. You will sooner convince me that the light of day is a product of my eyes or of public opinion than that the consciousness of good is not a direct consciousness of God.

As our sensations teach us what is outside our body, so the consciousness of God teaches us what is outside our spiritual person: it teaches us that justice, goodness, and truth are not products of my person but have been placed in me by God.

    Martineau.

    3. The first difficulty that now stands in the way of carrying out the law of God is that the existing human laws are directly opposed to it.

    4. Human laws are good and of worth only insofar as they conform to the law of God, applying and developing it. And they are always bad when they contradict that law, and in that case we are not only entitled but bound to abolish them.

    5. Before any of us can set about studying the most important questions of life, we must first, before answering them, refute the structures of lies, heaped up over the centuries and propped up by all the ingenuity of the mind, on every one of the most essential questions of life.

    6. The institution of government is in essence a clear sign that man has lost in social life the consciousness of his divinity and must therefore resort to outside authority. Having lost this consciousness, he must lean on an outward law. But outward law is always mistaken. If every man kept this consciousness, one with the consciousness of his neighbors, there could be no such discord; but when this consciousness weakens, artificial means become necessary to uphold it, and so, as the consciousness of their unity weakens, there arises the form of government, which is not a true expression of the life of the whole people but only the outwardly coercive power of a ruling class.

The law of God contradicts human law: what is to be done? Hide the law of God and proclaim the human one? That has been done for 1900 years now, but the divine law becomes ever more visible, and the inner contradiction ever stronger and more tormenting. One thing remains: to replace human law with the law of God.
