Neither the descriptions nor the sight of the horrors of war keeps people from taking part in war. One of the reasons for this is that all who contemplate the horrors of war arrive, in spite of themselves, at an unexpressed, vague consideration: that if so terrible a thing exists and is permitted, then there probably also exist causes of this terrible thing that are hidden from them. This consideration leads people who are often not wicked to defend war, seeking out its beneficial sides, as they seek out the beneficence of the forces of nature, and forgetting that they themselves make it.

1. Thought halts in horror before the catastrophe that inevitably awaits us at the end of the century, and we must prepare ourselves for it. For 20 years (now more than 50) all the efforts of knowledge have been spent on inventing instruments of destruction, and soon a few cannon shots will be enough to wipe out a whole army. Now it is not, as before, a few thousand poor hirelings who are under arms, but nations, whole nations, that are preparing to kill one another. To prepare them for murder, their hatred is inflamed by assuring them that they are hated, and gentle people believe it; and any moment now crowds of peaceful citizens, having received the absurd order to kill one another over God knows what ridiculous drawing of frontiers or some commercial or colonial interests, will hurl themselves at one another with the ferocity of wild beasts.
And they will go like sheep to the slaughter, knowing what they are going to, knowing that they are leaving their wives, that their children will go hungry; yet they will go, so intoxicated with sonorous and lying words, so deceived, that, imagining that the slaughter is their duty, they will ask God to bless their bloody deeds. And they will go on, trampling the harvests they sowed, burning the towns they built, with rapturous singing, with shouts of joy, with festive music; they will go without rebelling, submissive and humble, although the strength is in them, and although, if they could agree among themselves, they would establish common sense and brotherhood in place of the savage wiles of diplomats.

2. An eyewitness tells what he saw in the Russo-Japanese War when he stepped onto the deck of the “Varyag.” The sight was horrible. Everywhere blood, shreds of flesh, headless trunks, torn-off arms, and a smell of blood that sickened even the most hardened. The conning tower had suffered most of all. A shell burst at its top and killed the young officer who was directing the aim of the guns. Of the unfortunate man nothing remained but a clenched hand still gripping the instrument. Of the four men who were with the captain, two were blown to pieces and the other two badly wounded (both their legs were amputated, and then had to be amputated a second time); the captain escaped with a blow on the temple from a splinter.
And that is not all. The neutrals cannot take the wounded aboard their steamers, because gangrene and fever are contagious.
Gangrene and purulent hospital infections, together with hunger, fire, devastation, disease, typhus, and smallpox, are also a part of military glory. Such is war.
And meanwhile Joseph de Maistre sang the blessings of war in this way:
“When the human soul, grown soft, loses its spring, becomes unbelieving, and takes on the putrid vices that follow upon the excesses of civilization, it can be restored only in blood.”
But the poor, out of whom cannon fodder is made, have a right to disagree with this.
Unfortunately, they lack the courage of their convictions. All the evil comes from this. Long accustomed to letting themselves be killed over questions they do not understand, they go on doing it, imagining that all is going very well.
It is because of this that corpses now lie there, devoured under the water by crabs.
While the grapeshot was shattering everything around them, they can hardly have been glad to think that all this was being done for their good, to restore the soul of their contemporaries, which had lost its spring through an excess of civilization.
The poor wretches had probably not read Joseph de Maistre. I advise the wounded to read him between one dressing and the next. They will learn that war is as necessary as the executioner, because, like him, it is a manifestation of the justice of God.
And this great thought will serve them as a consolation while the surgeon’s saw is sawing through their bones.

3. War is more terrible than ever. A skilled artist in this trade, that murderer of genius, Mr. Moltke, answered the peace delegates in these strange words:
“War is holy, a divine institution, one of the sacred laws of the world. It sustains in people all the great and noble feelings: honor, unselfishness, virtue, courage — in a word, it saves people from loathsome materialism.”
So then: to band together in herds of four hundred thousand men, to march day and night without rest, to think of nothing, to study nothing, to learn nothing, to read nothing, to be of use to no one, to rot in filth, to sleep in mud, to live like cattle in a constant stupor, to plunder towns, to burn villages, to ruin nations; then, on meeting another such mass of human flesh, to fall upon it, to shed lakes of blood, to cover the fields with torn flesh and strew the earth with heaps of corpses, to be crippled, to be crushed to no one’s profit whatever, and at last to die like a beast somewhere in a foreign field, while your parents, your wife, and your children are dying of hunger at home — this is called saving people from loathsome materialism.
4. The time to reason about the harm of war is past. Everything has already been said about it. Now one thing remains, the thing with which each of us should have begun: not to do what we consider we ought not to do.
It is not true that the existence of war proves its necessity. The conscience of humanity says that this is not true and that war ought not to be.
