There was a time when people ate one another; a time came when they stopped doing so, but they still go on eating animals. Now a time has come when people are more and more giving up this terrible habit as well.

    1. How strange it is that the various societies for the defense of children and the protection of animals are wholly indifferent to vegetarianism, when it is precisely the eating of meat that is, in most cases, the cause of the very cruelty they want to combat by means of punishment. The fulfillment of the law of love can restrain cruelty more powerfully than the fear of criminal liability. There is hardly any difference between the cruelty committed in torturing and killing to satisfy one’s feeling of anger and the cruelty committed in torturing and killing to make use of the flesh of animals, by feeding on which people kindle in themselves the chief fire of cruelty.

    2. The great trinity of curses: tobacco, wine, and the flesh of animals. From this terrible trinity come both great calamities and great ruin. Falling under the power of this trinity, people draw nearer to the animals and lose both their human semblance and the greatest good of human life: a clear understanding and a kind heart.

It is asserted that beasts have no rights; the illusion is harboured that our conduct, so far as they are concerned, has no moral significance, or, as it is put in the language of these codes, that "there are no duties to be fulfilled towards animals." Such a view is one of revolting coarseness, a barbarism of the West, whose source is Judaism.

    3. In the error that our actions toward animals have no moral significance, or, to speak in the language of conventional morality, that there are no duties whatever toward animals — in this error is revealed a revolting crudeness and barbarity.

    4. A traveler came up to some African cannibals while they were eating some kind of meat. He asked them what they were eating. They answered that the meat was human.

“Can you really eat that?” cried the traveler. “Why not? With salt it is very tasty,” the Africans answered him. They were so used to what they were doing that they could not even understand what the traveler’s exclamation was about.

In just the same way meat-eaters do not understand the indignation that vegetarians feel at the sight of pigs, lambs, and oxen eaten only because their meat is tasty with salt.

    5. The killing and eating of animals comes about chiefly because people have been assured that animals are intended by God for people’s use and that there is nothing wrong in killing animals. But this is not true. In whatever books it may be written that it is no sin to kill animals, in the hearts of us all it is written, more clearly than in books, that we must have pity on an animal just as on a human being, and we all know this, unless we stifle our conscience.

Do not be troubled that when you give up eating meat all those close to you at home will attack you, condemn you, laugh at you. If meat-eating were a matter of indifference, meat-eaters would not attack vegetarianism; they are irritated because in our time they are already conscious of their sin but are not yet able to free themselves from it.
