    Hear, attend, but speak little.
Never answer a question not addressed to you ; but, if asked, answer promptly and concisely, never feeling ashamed to say, ' I knownot.'
Never seek the highest place, nor even accept it if it be offered to you.
… otherwise it will become an idol to you ; and it is incumbent on every one to break his idols and renounce his (bad) habits.

    1. Listen, be attentive, but speak little.

Never speak unless you are asked; but if you are asked, answer at once and briefly, and do not be ashamed if you must admit that you do not know what you are asked about.

Do not argue for the sake of arguing.

    Do not boast.

Do not seek the highest place, and do not accept it even if it is offered to you.

In matters of indifference, that is, those in which you do not have to betray your duty, conform to the habits and wishes of those you live with.

Do not try to do anything that is not your obligation and does not serve the comfort of those you live with, or else this habit will become an idol. And every man must break his idols.

All the earth I'd wandered over seeking still the beacon light, Never tarried in the daytime, never sought repose at night ; Till I heard a reverend preacher all the mystery declare, Then I looked within my bosom, and 'twas shining brightly there.

    1. I went over the whole earth in search of a guiding light. I sought it without rest, day and night, and at last I heard a preacher who revealed the truth to me. This preacher was in my own soul, and the light I had sought throughout the world was within me.

If thou art a Mussulman, go stay with the Franks ; if a Christian, join the Jews ; if a Shuah, mix with the …
… schismatics : whatever thy religion, associate with men of opposite persuasion.
If in hearing their discourses thou art not in the least moved, but canst mix with them freely, thou hast attained peace, and art a master of creation.
Hafiz says, ' The object of all religions is alike. All men seek their beloved ; and all the world is love's dwelling : why talk of a mosque or a church ? '
