The Jubilee name index refers «Юм» on this page (vol. 41, p. 384) to David Hume (1711–1776) and gives no source; its other reference to Hume (vol. 42) concerns a saying on war that Tolstoy wrote into an unsent letter and that never reached the Circle. Southgate's Many Thoughts of Many Minds prints three Hume sayings, none of them this one.
