There is nothing more attractive than humility joined with kindness. But it has to be sought: it does not put itself on display.

And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.
But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.
For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.

2. And there was also a dispute among them as to which of them should be thought the greatest. But he said to them: Kings lord it over the nations, and those who have power over them are called benefactors; but not so with you: whoever among you is greater, let him be as the lesser, and whoever leads, as one who serves. For who is greater: the one who reclines at table, or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as one who serves.
3. Once in winter Francis was walking with Brother Leo from Perugia to the Portiuncula; it was so cold that they shivered with cold. Francis called Brother Leo, who was walking ahead, and said to him: “O Brother Leo, God grant that our brothers give an example of holy living throughout the earth; but write down that perfect joy is not in this.”
Going on a little farther, Francis again called Brother Leo: “And write down also, Brother Leo, that if our brothers heal the sick, cast out devils, give sight to the blind, or raise those who have been dead four days — write down that in this too there will be no perfect joy.”
And going on farther still, Francis said to Leo: “Write down also, Brother Leo, that if our brothers knew all languages, all the sciences, and all the scriptures, if they prophesied not only of the future but knew all the secrets of conscience and of the soul — write down that in this too there is no perfect joy.”
Going on farther still, Francis again called Leo and said: “And write down also, Brother Leo, little sheep of God, that if we learned to speak with the tongues of angels, if we learned the courses of the stars, and if all the treasures of the earth were opened to us, and we came to know all the secrets of the life of birds, of fish, of all animals, of people, of trees, of stones, and of waters — write down that even this would not be perfect joy.”
And going on a little more, Francis again called Brother Leo and said to him: “Write down also that if we were such preachers that we converted all the heathen to the faith of Christ — write down that in this too there would be no perfect joy.”
Then Brother Leo said to Francis: “What, then, Brother Francis, is perfect joy?”
And Francis answered: “It is this: if, when we come to the Portiuncula dirty, wet, stiff with cold, and hungry, and ask to be let in, the gatekeeper says to us: ‘Why do you tramps go roaming about the world, leading the people astray, stealing the alms of the poor? Get out of here!’ — and does not open to us. And if we then are not offended, and think with humility and love that the gatekeeper is right, that God himself prompted him to treat us so, and, wet, cold, and hungry, stay in the snow and the water until morning without murmuring against the gatekeeper, then, Brother Leo, only then will there be perfect joy.”

Lao-Tze’s Tao-Teh-KingThat rivers and oceans can of the hundred valleys be kings is due to their excelling in lowliness.
Therefore the holy man, when anxious to be above the people, must in his words keep underneath them. When anxious to lead the people, he must with his person keep behind them.
Therefore the holy man dwells above, but the people are not burdened. He is ahead, but the people suffer no harm.
Therefore the world rejoices in exalting him without tiring. Because he strives not, no one in the world will strive with him.

Текст источника: zh.wikisource.orgВ английском переводе · James Legge, 1891That whereby the rivers and seas are able to receive the homage and tribute of all the valley streams, is their skill in being lower than they;--it is thus that they are the kings of them all.
So it is that the sage (ruler), wishing to be above men, puts himself by his words below them, and, wishing to be before them, places his person behind them.
In this way though he has his place above them, men do not feel his weight, nor though he has his place before them, do they feel it an injury to them.
Therefore all in the world delight to exalt him and do not weary of him. Because he does not strive, no one finds it possible to strive with him.

4. That rivers and seas hold sway over the valleys through which they flow comes from their being lower than the valleys.
Therefore the holy man, if he wishes to be above the people, must become lower than they. If he wishes to lead them, he must be behind them.
Therefore, though the holy man stands above the people, the people do not feel it. Though he stands in front of the people, the people do not see it and do not suffer from it. He contends with no one, and no one in the world contends with him. That is why the world praises him without ceasing.
5. A sage was told that people thought him a bad man. He answered: “It is a good thing they do not know everything about me; they would say worse still.”
Avoid judging yourself and, above all, comparing yourself with others. Compare yourself only with perfection.
