As long as there is violence, there will be war. Violence can be overcome not by violence, but by nonresistance to it and nonparticipation in it.

    2. The savage instinct of murder in war has been so carefully cultivated and encouraged over thousands of years that it has put down deep roots in the human brain. It is to be hoped, however, that a society better than ours will manage to free itself from this terrible crime. But what will that better humanity think then of the so-called refined civilization of which we are so proud? Almost the same as we think of the ancient Mexican people and their cannibalism, at once warlike, pious and bestial.

… but I speak of discipline--of remembering that the corporal is always in the right when he speaks to a private soldier, the sergeant when he speaks to the corporal, the sergeant-major when speaking to the sergeant, the second lieutenant when he orders the sergeant-major, and so on to the Marshal of France--even if the superior asserts that two and two make five, or that the moon shines at midday.

    3. And I understood discipline: namely, that the corporal is always right when he speaks to a soldier, the sergeant when he speaks to the corporal, the sergeant major when he speaks to the sergeant, and so on up to the field marshal, even if they were to say that two times two is five. At first this is hard to understand, but understanding is helped by the fact that a placard hangs in every barracks, and it is read through to make one’s ideas clear. On this placard is written everything a soldier might wish to do — for instance, to go back to his village, to refuse to serve, to disobey his superior, and so on — and for all of it the punishments are set down: death, or five years’ hard labor.

    4. I have bought a Negro; he is mine. He works like a horse; I feed him poorly, clothe him just as poorly, and beat him when he does not obey. What is so surprising in that? Do we treat our soldiers any better? Are they not deprived of freedom just as this Negro is? The only difference is that a soldier costs much less. A good Negro now costs at least 500 écus; a good soldier, barely 50. Neither one can leave the place where he is kept; both are beaten for the slightest mistake; the pay is almost the same; but the Negro has this advantage over the soldier, that he does not put his life in danger but spends it with his wife and children.

    Anatole France [Voltaire].

War will be done away with only when people take no part whatever in violence and are ready to bear all the persecutions they may suffer for it. This is the one means of doing away with war.
