We only hear a part, and much of that we understand not ; still, though little, it is something — something great, solemn, suggestive, sanctifying, something that proves the existence of a capacity to receive.

We are in the universe like a child who enters a lecture-room when a profound philosopher is in the midst of a discourse on some great branch of science, and who leaves before the subject has concluded : his ear received a little, and all it received he understood not.
God's great discourse commenced ages before we entered the scene of knowledge, and will go on when we are in the dust.
We only hear a part, and much of that we understand not ; still though little it is something— something great, solemn, suggestive, sanctifying — something that proves the existence of a capacity to receive.

    5. In the world we are like a child who has come into a room where a learned man is speaking about his science. The child has not heard the beginning and leaves before the end. He has heard something, but has not understood what he heard. The great discourse of God was begun many centuries before we began our learning, and it will go on even when we are dust. We have heard only a part of it, and have not understood the greater part of what we heard. But all the same, though only a little and dimly, we have understood something great and solemn.
